UAW ARAMARK WORKERS STRIKE

https://uaw.org/uaw-aramark-workers-strike/

September 15, 2019

At midnight over 850 Aramark workers in Michigan and Ohio walked off the job over better wages, health care and retirement.

“We have UAW members who work long, hard hours and are still on public assistance,” said Gerald Kariem, Director of UAW Region 1D. “It’s shameful.”

Aramark maintenance workers in Hamtramck, Warren, Flint, Grand Blanc and Parma, Ohio have been working on an extended contract since March of 2018.

Key issues involve wages, caps on health insurance, vacation time and 401k retirement.

“Every day, UAW members go to work and keep these plants profitable,” said UAW Region 1 Director Frank Stuglin. “It’s astounding that Aramark has not agreed to bargain in good faith over their contributions.”

UAW Region 2B Director Rich Rankin said UAW members have been working on contract extensions far too long. “Every day these UAW members play a crucial role in keeping these plants operating. Aramark needs to provide these workers with fair wages and benefits.”

No photo description available.

Join us for one of the 4 simultaneous interfaith gatherings occurring near the Capitol, between 10:30 – 11:30 am.

*** And it would be wonderful if your congregation could join us for these events as well!

The 4 interfaith gatherings will be at:
Bethel Lutheran, 312 Wisconsin Ave.
Grace Episcopal, 116 W. Washington Ave.
First United Methodist, 203 Wisconsin Ave.
St. John’s Lutheran, 322 E. Washington Ave.

These gathering sites were chosen for their proximity to the Capitol, which will help us to assemble for the 12:00 noon – Concert for the Climate at the State St. corner. From there we will Parade to the Youth. The youth will be at MGE – asking for a commitment to transition to 100% renewable energy by 2030.

We plan to have wheelchairs, volunteer wheelchair pushers, and shuttle vehicles available for those for whom this 0.6-mile walk would be hard or impossible. (If you know of a place from which we could borrow one or more wheelchairs, please call 608-630-3633 and let me know.

*** If your congregation is coming as a group, to help disperse our numbers somewhat equitably at the four gatherings, we ask that someone from your congregation call Claire at 608-334-5279. With her help, you and your group will know just where to show up.

Faith leaders who would like to represent their faith tradition at this important event can sign up by using the following link: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/70A0D4FA5AF2BA5FB6-climate.

I’d also really enjoy getting a call from you, but that isn’t necessary.

Lastly, please share this event with all who may be called to support this historic turning point for humanity.

In Solidarity for justice, peace, and a sustainable future for our children,

Remember the Irish Blanket Protest & Hunger Strikes! U.S.-Britain Out Of Ireland!

Today in history: September 14, 1976 – The blanket protest begins when Irish Republican prisoner Kieran Nugent refuses to wear prison uniform, demanding that Irish revolutionary prisoners be recognized and treated as political prisoners as they had before, instead of being treated as non-political prisoners. The blanket protest was part of a five year protest by Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) and Irish National Liberation Army (INLA) prisoners held in Long Kesh prison in the north of Ireland. After the blanket protest came the ‘dirty protest’ and then the 1981 hunger strike in which 10 prisoners gave their lives. #IRA #Ireland #INLA #PrisonStrike

Union Members in Minnesota Protest Amazon’s Involvement with ICE

https://bit.ly/2lVTZc8

Tuesday union members protested outside the Amazon-owned Whole Foods in downtown Minneapolis Tuesday afternoon demanding Amazon drop contracts with Immigrant and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and data-mining corporation Palantir.

During a short program outside of the store, speakers from Immigrant Worker Solidarity shared the harm being caused by our current immigration policies, made worse by Amazon’s technology.

Immigrant Worker Solidarity (IWS), is a new group of Minnesota workers supporting immigrants inside and outside the labor movement.

“As a union that includes members from many backgrounds, we know that the current system of tearing families apart is terrible and needs to be fixed. The fact that Amazon is not only supporting this system but making profits off the misery of so many families is wrong,” said Sheigh Freeberg, Secretary-Treasurer of the MN Hospitality Workers’ union, UNITE-HERE Local 17. “It is time for Amazon to cut ties with ICE and Palantir.”

The Intercept reported in 2017 that Palantir developed an intelligence system called Investigative Case Management (ICM) for Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

“ICM funding documents analyzed by The Intercept make clear that the system is far from a passive administrator of ICE’s case flow. ICM allows ICE agents to access a vast “ecosystem” of data to facilitate immigration officials in both discovering targets and then creating and administering cases against them. The system provides its users access to intelligence platforms maintained by the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and an array of other federal and private law enforcement entities. It can provide ICE agents access to information on a subject’s schooling, family relationships, employment information, phone records, immigration history, foreign exchange program status, personal connections, biometric traits, criminal records, and home and work addresses.”

Documents released earlier this year specifically mentioned that Palantir software was used to place information about the arrival of unaccompanied minors at the border into ICM.

Palantir was, founded by billionaire Peter Thiel, one of President Trump’s most vocal supporters in Silicon Valley. Palantir received backing from the venture capital arm of the Central Intelligence Agency.

In the past Immigrant rights advocacy organization Mijente has called on Amazon to stop offering hosting servers to Palantir. Amazon hosts a variety of data on their servers used in the identification, targeting, and deportation of immigrants. They’ve also sold their facial recognition software to law enforcement and the government.

“AMAZON ISN’T THE ONLY TECH COMPANY DOING THIS, BUT IT HAS THE LARGEST ROLE. THROUGH INTENSE LOBBYING OF POLICYMAKERS AND LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICIALS, AMAZON AND PALANTIR HAVE SECURED A ROLE AS THE BACKBONE FOR THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT’S IMMIGRATION AND LAW ENFORCEMENT DRAGNET.”
