Moratorium NOW! Coalition

Friends – This past week has witnessed the largest uprising against racism in more than a generation. Here in Detroit as well as across the country in cities and towns, a huge outpouring of outrage against the murder of George Floyd has erupted. Remarkably the protests are showing African Americans shoulder to shoulder with Latinx, Arabs, Asians and whites. And the movement is overwhelmingly young people, who have seen their slim economic prospects further curtailed by the Covid-19 economic collapse.

We activists have a duty to lend our support in whatever ways we can to sustain and encourage this ongoing demand for real change. The Moratorium Now Coalition and the Michigan Emergency Committee Against War & Injustice will start meeting (over computer through zoom meetings) tomorrow, Thursday, June 4 at 11 AM and continue meeting daily as long as we feel is necessary. We want to share our experiences in the streets nightly as well as discuss how we can offer moral and material support to the protests locally.

Friends of the Professional Staff Union

The Executive Committee of the Professional Staff Union of Ohio voted unanimously June 3, 2020 to adopt a resolution condemning police violence against communities of color and supporting the #BlackLivesMatter movement.

St Paul Principles

1. Our solidarity will be based on respect for a diversity of tactics and the
plans of other groups.

2. The actions and tactics used will be organized to maintain a separation of
time or space.

3. Any debates or criticisms will stay internal to the movement, avoiding any
public or media denunciations of fellow activists and events.

4. We oppose any state repression of dissent, including surveillance,
infiltration, disruption and violence. we agree not to assist law enforcement
actions against activists and others.

To Whom It Concerns,

It has come to our attention that campus is working with the local police department to use the campus as a holding area during the protests against police brutality. As alumni and community members of UW-Milwaukee, we chose UW Milwaukee because of the diversity and acceptance that was touted during our time on campus. It is with anger and shame that we learned that our school Is not upholding the very values they boast.
Innovation, leadership, and collaboration that fosters learning through education, scholarship and research, and public service.
Opportunities for open inquiry to support the positive transformation of individuals (students, faculty, and staff), institutions, and communities.
A caring, compassionate, and collegial community characterized by mutual respect and safety.
Diversity in all of its definitions, including who we are, how we think, and what we do.
Ethical behavior, based on integrity, accountability, and responsibility
Transparent and inclusive decision making.
Stewardship of resources that promote sustainability, prosperity, and equity for all in the local and global communities.
Pride in our institution, our unique qualities, and our vital role.
We have kept our school afloat while you have sold your students and community out. You have not been transparent or a community leader, and we need that to change. We demand that UW-Milwaukee cut ties with Milwaukee PD and no longer use our campus as a jail. Until UW-Milwaukee sees fit to live up to their values, we as alumni will no longer be sending money and will actively encourage prospective students to go elsewhere until the system learns to value black lives.

Milwaukee’s March for Justice

Join us as we peacefully march for George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and the many others who were unjustly taken from us.

This moment is about us, the people, making a change. Its time for our voices to be heard. Time for our most essential needs to be met. We live in one of the most segregated cities in America; We need to show Milwaukee we can break the mold. This is our moment for change and to rewrite history. Lets keep up the fight, the hard work, the blood, sweat, tears, and the vigor that everyone has given in these last weeks- Lets Keep fighting, Lets Keep marching until we are finally heard.
