Milwaukee, October 31, 2020: ANTI DISPLACEMENT/ ANTI GENTRIFICATION PROTEST

Hosted by Nakeysha Roberts Washington and Fatima Laster
ANTI DISPLACEMENT/ ANTI GENTRIFICATION PROTEST
RID THE BID!
The perpetuation of racism, inequality and injustice towards Black and Brown individuals and families extends beyond police brutality. When it’s systemic, it unfortunately infiltrates every aspect of our lives, including equitable and access to quality housing, schooling, employment, healthcare and more. When historically left without, thus becoming disenfranchised, people make due, but still deserve these basic rights and needs. This does not invite the “Powers-That-Be” to devalue and displace human lives and communities.
As revealed in an Op-Ed (see the end of this letter), Black and Brown residents and small businesses of the North and South sides of Milwaukee are undergoing rapid gentrification and being priced-out and displaced from their homes and neighborhoods. We are mobilizing in solidarity against the decimation of our communities.Come walk/bike/carpool with us from the North Side to the South Side to demand the preservation of our homes and businesses and to stop BIDs (Business Improvement Districts) and other gentrifying agents, including our elected officials, from forcing us out of our homes and eradicating our neighborhoods.
JOIN US IN PROTEST & OPPOSITION TO:
land grabs
excessive solicitations to sell our homes
higher property taxes leading to tax foreclosures because we won’t sell our homes
higher rents and unaffordable housing
being excluded from community development plans but being forced to pay for them
developments that don’t meet community needs
being controlled by outside investors
blocking the community from owning its own neighborhood
withholding public services to only be charged by a private entity
elected officials who work against the people
erasing the culture and color from our communities
displacing our families
intimidation and retaliation for exercising our rights
We’ll be starting at 5 Points Art Gallery & Studios (3514 N. Port Washington Ave., Milwaukee, WI 53212) at 10 AM on Saturday, October 31, 2020 and ending on the Near South Side of Milwaukee.
There will be stops in critical neighborhoods along the way. Please wear cloth face masks in accordance with CDC’s COVID-19 regulations. In observance of the ancestral Fet Gede, Días de los Muertos, and Halloween holidays, participants may respectfully dress in costumes.
GENTRIFICATION ≠ PROGRESS

Shelby Twp., Michigan, October 24, 2020: March Against Racism & Police Brutality

Hosted by SHIFT – Suburban Solidarity for Social Justice and Detroit Will Breathe
On Saturday, October 24th, join SHIFT and Detroit Will Breathe as we rally and march against racism & police brutality in Shelby Township, Michigan.
Over the last four months, anti-racist activists and concerned citizens in Shelby Twp. have committed themselves to protesting the grotesque abuses of power by Shelby Twp. Chief of Police Robert Shelide, and the racist actions and rhetoric of Board of Trustee member John Vermeulen, all of which came to light after the murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis Police.Despite numerous requests by residents of Shelby and SE Michigan, Shelby officials have simply not done enough to address & change the TOXIC culture of police-brutality and racism that permeate their ranks.
The Shelby Board’s silence on these matters has continued to enable racism and endanger the lives of BIPOC residents. We come together in protest to DEMAND that Shelby Township leadership condemn racism and police brutality in ALL forms and adopt a zero-tolerance policy for all officials and public servants. We demand true accountability and decisive anti-racist actions and policies from the Shelby Township Board of Trustees. We stand in solidarity with all BIPOC residents and call on the people of Shelby and SE Michigan to demand better from Shelby Township.
