Public outcry forces Kroger to drop demands for “Emergency Pay” repayment
Supermarket workers at Kroger recently reported receiving collection letters from the company alleging that they were overpaid “emergency pay” while on sick leave, and demanding the workers pay the company back. Their union, UFCW Local 400, investigated each case thoroughly and were preparing to file grievances against the company, but after an exposé in Dissent Magazine featuring a Local 400 member sparked an outcry from workers and customers on social media, the company backed down. The union said it was pleased Kroger had come to its senses and urged the company to “focus their attention on extending ‘hero pay’ until this crisis is over.”

United National Antiwar Coalition (UNAC) statement:
Defend Black Lives!
NO Police State! NO Military Dictatorship!
Release all arrestees! NO more attacks on anti-racist protesters!
The United National Antiwar Coalition (UNAC) stands in solidarity with communities across the country who are rising up in protest against racist police violence. As Donald Trump calls for the deployment of the U.S military in response to these national protests, UNAC condemns the use of any police and military forces being deployed to violently suppress these protests. We call on all anti-war activists to help organize or join in these actions demanding justice and an end to the state-terror being inflicted upon black and brown communities within this country. Moratorium Now Coalition Daily Online Meetings @ 11 A.M. (EST) Beginning June 4, 2020. Build the People’s Uprising Against Racism!
Moratorium NOW! Coalition
Friends – This past week has witnessed the largest uprising against racism in more than a generation. Here in Detroit as well as across the country in cities and towns, a huge outpouring of outrage against the murder of George Floyd has erupted. Remarkably the protests are showing African Americans shoulder to shoulder with Latinx, Arabs, Asians and whites. And the movement is overwhelmingly young people, who have seen their slim economic prospects further curtailed by the Covid-19 economic collapse.
We activists have a duty to lend our support in whatever ways we can to sustain and encourage this ongoing demand for real change. The Moratorium Now Coalition and the Michigan Emergency Committee Against War & Injustice will start meeting (over computer through zoom meetings) tomorrow, Thursday, June 4 at 11 AM and continue meeting daily as long as we feel is necessary. We want to share our experiences in the streets nightly as well as discuss how we can offer moral and material support to the protests locally.
To join the morning briefings you must first register here in advance:
