Did you miss the virtual event “Revolutionary Medicine in a Time of Pandemic”?

The Zoom event included a clip from the documentary “Revolutionary Medicine,” which highlights the impact of ELAM, Cuba’s international medical school that is free of charge, asking only that its graduates serve the underserved; with an inspiring appearance by Dr. Abraham Vela, a graduate of ELAM who works as a doctor in Los Angeles; and information on IFCO/Pastors for Peace from its Executive Director, Gail Walker. If you couldn’t be with us on June 23rd, we recorded the event for you to watch and share at your leisure. Click here to watch.

The Wasp Network

See “The Wasp Network,” now on Netflix, a star-studded spy thriller dramatizing much of the Cuban 5 case, which has spurred calls by anti-Cuba groups and politicians to silence the film. “In Florida they have threatened to burn cinemas, if the film is ever shown in theaters, and signatures are collected to force Netflix to withdraw the film.” Click here to read about the controversy surrounding this thriller.  Read The Independent’s review here. And here is another article about the importance of this film.

Scholars Strategy Network hires union-busters to fight staff union

Management at the pro-democracy organization the Scholars Strategy Network (SSN) has hired the prominent union-busting law firm Ogletree Deakins to represent them against their staff’s union, reports the Nonprofit Professional Employees Union (NPEU). This comes after SSN Director Theda Skocpol refused to voluntarily recognize the SSN Union, forcing SSN staff to file for a union election with the Trump National Labor Relations Board. SSN staff are unionizing with NPEU. “It’s absolutely disgusting that an organization dedicated to ‘strengthening democracy’ would go to such great lengths to suppress its staff’s union. If management valued a democratic workplace, they would recognize their staff’s union immediately, instead of seeking counsel from a notoriously anti-worker law firm,” said NPEU President Kayla Blado. “We call on SSN to fire Ogletree Deakins and immediately recognize their staff’s union.” Read more here. https://npeu.org/

A number of unions are participating in today’s National Day of Action in 20 cities, demanding the Senate pass the HEROES Act to provide PPE, essential pay and extended unemployment benefits. “The National Strike/Day of Action is a worker-driven action to demand that bosses and elected officials address the systemic racism that drives economic inequality in this country,” said CWA, which is joining SEIU, the Teamsters, AFT, and community-based organizations to promote the action. “We are demanding guaranteed sick pay, affordable health care, strengthened health and safety protections for essential workers, and stronger organizing rights for all workers.” Check out #StrikeForBlackLives on Twitter for details.

ANC, Mandela and the African American struggle: How national and class oppression shaped the evolution of movements in South Africa and the US

https://bit.ly/39ax1Tk

Feb 12, 2014

As the African National Congress celebrates 20 years in power this year, many people may not know that the anti-apartheid liberation organization had close links with the African American civil rights movement. ANC should continue to support liberation struggles around the world

With the passing of Nelson Mandela on December 5, 2013, the impact of his life and political work was recognized by not just the people of South Africa and the African continent but oppressed and struggling peoples throughout the world. People of African descent outside of Africa, particularly in the United States, cherished the legacy of Mandela and saw within him much that was reflective and inspirational to the African American people’s movement for genuine equality and self-determination.

Yet what is often not recognized is the more than a century-old linkage between the South African and African American peoples which extends back even prior to the founding of the South African Native National Congress (SANNC) in 1912, which was later named the African National Congress (ANC) in 1923. Key figures within the South African and African American anti-racist movements intersected inside both the U.S. and Africa….
