CALL FOR WEEK OF EMERGENCY ACTIONS NOV. 11-17, 2019

On Nov. 10 President Evo Morales of Bolivia was forced to resign during a military coup supported by the U.S. government. Fascist terror has swept over the country in recent weeks since President Morales won re-election, including the racist, sexist attack on Mayor Patricia Arce of Vinto, who was terrorized and dragged through the streets.

Struggle-La Lucha newspaper and the Partido por el Socialismo Unido/Socialist Unity Party call on the workers and the progressive movement to take immediate emergency actions to defend the life of Evo Morales, the Indigenous community and the progressive social movements of Bolivia. We hold President Donald Trump and the U.S. Congress responsible for their safety. We join the call of Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez: “We call for a worldwide mobilization for the life and freedom of Evo.”

We remember how the attempted 2002 coup against Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez was derailed by the intervention of the masses and international solidarity. We must do everything in our power to prevent a repeat of the fascist terror that swept Chile after the Sept. 11, 1973, Pinochet coup organized by Washington.

Evo Morales is the first Indigenous president, representing the Bolivian majority, in the country’s 200-year history. Morales has been a global leader in the struggle to defend the planet from capitalist-driven climate change. The same capitalist interests trying to destroy the Amazon forest are behind the coup in Bolivia.

Since Morales took office representing the Movement Towards Socialism, extreme poverty dropped from 38 percent in 2006 to 17 percent in 2018; the national minimum wage increased by roughly 104 percent; and over $1 billion was allocated for construction of over 5,000 medical clinics, schools and gymnasiums in poor areas.

The struggle in Bolivia is far from over. Today the class struggle is raging across the South American continent between forces representing U.S. imperialism, colonialism, racism and austerity, and the people’s movements that refuse to be ground down under the boot heel of the rich and powerful.

Workers, anti-war and anti-imperialist activists in the U.S. have a special responsibility to show solidarity with the oppressed fighting around the world against the domination of Wall Street and Washington. It is our responsibility to do all we can to push back the U.S. political, economic and military attacks on Bolivia and all of Latin America.

U.S. Hands Off Bolivia! Protest the racist and fascist coup!

Defend the life of Evo Morales, the first Indigenous president in Bolivia’s history! Defend Indigenous movements and workers’ movements! Protest the fascist U.S.-sponsored coup against Evo and the people of Bolivia!

This right-wing coup is a RACIST attack on the indigenous people of Bolivia and of Latin America. The fascist right-wing opposition in Bolivia also brutally attacked and assaulted a female indigenous mayor in Bolivia on Thursday.

Evo Morales was popularly elected and is supported by the majority of the Bolivian masses. His administration has instituted massive, progressive reforms in the country. Evo has tirelessly opposed U.S. intervention in Bolivia and in Latin America. Bolivia has been at the forefront of the struggle against climate change in Latin America.

Bolivia is rich in its natural resources so it is a prime target for the imperialists. U.S. imperialism strives to unseat popular, progressive leaders and install puppet governments that will do the U.S.’s bidding in pursuit of capital and global dominance.

Within the theater while the documentary was running people began to applaud Baldwin’s words which were spoken nearly five decades ago.

Race and the American Crisis in the 21st Century

Consequently, the evoking of these searing questions still has much relevance for the current period in the U.S. The ascendancy of the Trump administration has made many whites comfortable to express their greatest fears through racist demagogy and practices.

This film by Peck makes an important contribution in fostering a dialogue about race, class and social justice. It is good to see Baldwin, who was a highly visible figure in the 1960s and 1970s both through the print media and mass communications outlets, almost resurrected through this documentary. Baldwin died from cancer in France on December 1, 1987.

Similar voices such as Baldwin’s are needed today. This film raises the question as to who are the public intellectuals in the America of the second decade of the 21st century; those activists and thinkers that are immersed in the burning and pressing issues of the day.

This inquiry can only be answered by the younger generation which has recognized the need to continue the revolution to its completion. How this is to be done remains a chapter to be written for the annals of the future.

The future of DACA and DREAMERS rests with the Supreme Court, which will start hearings on Nov.12 . The Court will determine what happens to the nearly 8,000 DREAMERS in Wisconsin alone. DACA is a band-aid, but without it, it puts more families at risk of separation under Trump‘s attacks on immigrant communities.

Gerry Condon has a long history in the veterans peace movement. In 1983-84, he organized the first two veterans delegations to revolutionary Nicaragua, and in 1987, he was a co-coordinator of the Veterans Peace Convoy to Nicaragua. From 1993-96, Gerry worked for IFCO/Pastors For Peace, organizing humanitarian aid and political solidarity caravans to Cuba. Since 2004, Gerry has been on the front lines of supporting Iraq and Afghanistan war resisters in Canada, Germany and elsewhere.

The Pardee Boys, an acoustic trio who got a warm reception at last year’s event, will perform before and during the program. They will begin at 6:30.

MPS Art Teachers Organizing to Win the Schools All Kids Deserve

Art Teachers are coming together November 19th at 5:30 to make a plan to fight for a more powerful art program in Milwaukee Public Schools. Our art program faces some challenges. Art teacher members of Milwaukee Teachers Education Association have formed a committee to bring workers together, identify issues, and formulate solutions. During this meeting we plan to review our survey results, identity some more issues, and organize working groups to begin piecing together proposed policy to strengthen our program.
