Philly Rally: No Coup in Bolivia! US Out of Latin America

New York City: Struggle-La Lucha newspaper and Partido por el Socialismo Unido/Socialist Unity Party joins with other organizations calling for an emergency action at the Bolivian Mission to the United Nations, 801 2nd Ave. (between 42nd and 43rd Sts.), in Manhattan on Monday, Nov. 11, 2019 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm.: Defend the Life of Evo Morales! Emergency protest

DEFEND THE LIFE OF EVO MORALES!
STOP THE U.S.-FASCIST COUP IN BOLIVIA
CALL FOR WEEK OF EMERGENCY ACTIONS NOV. 11-17, 2019

On Nov. 10 President Evo Morales of Bolivia was forced to resign during a military coup supported by the U.S. government. Fascist terror has swept over the country in recent weeks since President Morales won re-election, including the racist, sexist attack on Mayor Patricia Arce of Vinto, who was terrorized and dragged through the streets.

Struggle-La Lucha newspaper and the Partido por el Socialismo Unido/Socialist Unity Party call on the workers and the progressive movement to take immediate emergency actions to defend the life of Evo Morales, the Indigenous community and the progressive social movements of Bolivia. We hold President Donald Trump and the U.S. Congress responsible for their safety. We join the call of Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez: “We call for a worldwide mobilization for the life and freedom of Evo.”

We remember how the attempted 2002 coup against Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez was derailed by the intervention of the masses and international solidarity. We must do everything in our power to prevent a repeat of the fascist terror that swept Chile after the Sept. 11, 1973, Pinochet coup organized by Washington.

Evo Morales is the first Indigenous president, representing the Bolivian majority, in the country’s 200-year history. Morales has been a global leader in the struggle to defend the planet from capitalist-driven climate change. The same capitalist interests trying to destroy the Amazon forest are behind the coup in Bolivia.

Since Morales took office representing the Movement Towards Socialism, extreme poverty dropped from 38 percent in 2006 to 17 percent in 2018; the national minimum wage increased by roughly 104 percent; and over $1 billion was allocated for construction of over 5,000 medical clinics, schools and gymnasiums in poor areas.

The struggle in Bolivia is far from over. Today the class struggle is raging across the South American continent between forces representing U.S. imperialism, colonialism, racism and austerity, and the people’s movements that refuse to be ground down under the boot heel of the rich and powerful.

Workers, anti-war and anti-imperialist activists in the U.S. have a special responsibility to show solidarity with the oppressed fighting around the world against the domination of Wall Street and Washington. It is our responsibility to do all we can to push back the U.S. political, economic and military attacks on Bolivia and all of Latin America.

TAKE ACTION:

Truth and justice triumph: 187 countries against the U.S. blockade of Cuba

A total of 187 countries yesterday cast their votes in favor of Cuba in the United Nations General Assembly, rejecting the unjust economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the United States, for almost 60 years, on an unwavering, dignified people, who do not bow down before domination. An ironic coincidence is that the Trump administration has adopted precisely 187 hostile measures to damage our economy and living conditions.

Voting against were the United States and Israel, along with Jair Bolsonaro – who incidentally represents Brazil, but is not Brazil. The abstentions of Colombia and Ukraine, completed the tiny percentage against Cuba’s resolution, a glimpse of the minimal support enjoyed by the failed policy of our malicious neighbor.

“Voting against Cuba is voting for the continuity of genocide. #SomosCuba, a victory for Cuba,” wrote President of the Republic of Cuba Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, on his Twitter account, adding, “The blockade is real and we will defeat it with the support of the international community that, in its overwhelming majority, today voted with Cuba against the blockade. Lackey governments showed where their affinities lie. And they are alone along with the empire. A victory for Cuba.”

World Leaders, Organizations Condemn Coup Against Evo Morales in Bolivia

https://bit.ly/2paYUbu

Cuba’s government was also quick to reject the coup as President Miguel Diaz-Canel urged for “the world to mobilize for the life and freedom of Evo.”

World leaders and organizations expressed Sunday their solidarity with former Bolivian President Evo Morales under the hashtag #ElMundoconEvo (the World with Evo) and strongly condemned the right-wing coup which forced Morales to resign.

“I just heard that there was a coup d’état in Bolivia and that comrade Evo was forced to resign. It is unfortunate that Latin America has an economic elite that does not know how to live with democracy and the social inclusion of the poorest,” former Brazilian President and Leader of the Workers’ Party (PT) Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said.

The historic Brazilian leader’s message was echoed by Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro who “categorically condemned the consummated coup d’etat against the brother president Evo,” adding that “the social and political movements of the world declare mobilization to demand the preservation of the life of the Bolivian Indigenous people victims of racism.”

Cuba’s government was also quick to reject the coup as President Miguel Diaz-Canel urged for “the world to mobilize for the life and freedom of Evo.” Mexico’s President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador praised Morales’ decision to put the people first over his mandate.

This comes as Morales was forced to resign Sunday after senior army and police chiefs called on him to do so following weeks of right-wing unrest and violence against his Oct. 20 elections victory, in what his government has called a coup by opposition forces in the country.

“I decided to resign from my position so that Carlos Mesa and Luis Camacho stop abusing and harming thousands of brothers … I have the obligation to seek peace and it hurts a lot that we face Bolivians,” the former president of Bolivia said in a press statement.

Argentina’s President-elect Alberto Fernandez tweeted said that the “institutional breakdown in Bolivia is unacceptable. The Bolivian people must choose as soon as possible, in free and informed elections, their next government.

Bolivian Vice President Alvaro Garcia Linera also said that he was resigning from his position. The two leaders said that they would be handing their resignation letters to the country’s National Assembly.

Soon after the president of the Senate also quit thus breaking the Constitutional line of succession. As the country plunges into further chaos, international solidarity continues to be shared for Morales and his government.

“To see Evo who, along with a powerful movement, has brought so much social progress forced from office by the military is appalling. I condemn this coup against the Bolivian people and stand with them for democracy, social justice, and independence,” British Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn tweeted Sunday.

Social movements and organizations also shared their messages of support and condemnation to the internationally repudiated coup in Bolivia.

Brazil’s Landless Workers Movement energetically demanded “dictatorship never again,” as the called for the people to decide Bolivia’s future. While the Argentinian human rights movement of the Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo sided with Morales’ and his former vice president.

“We stand in solidarity with the people of Bolivia in these hours of suffering and demand the continuity of the transparent and unrestricted electoral process,” the progressive Group of Puebla issued a statement adding that they “demand that the International Human Rights Bodies guarantee the clarification of the acts of violence committed, the trial and punishment of those responsible, and the restoration of order, peace, social life, and democracy in Bolivia.”

Baltimore, November 11, 2019: U.S. Hands Off Bolivia! Protest the racist and fascist coup!

U.S. Hands Off Bolivia! Protest the racist and fascist coup!

Defend the life of Evo Morales, the first Indigenous president in Bolivia’s history! Defend Indigenous movements and workers’ movements! Protest the fascist U.S.-sponsored coup against Evo and the people of Bolivia!

This right-wing coup is a RACIST attack on the indigenous people of Bolivia and of Latin America. The fascist right-wing opposition in Bolivia also brutally attacked and assaulted a female indigenous mayor in Bolivia on Thursday.

Evo Morales was popularly elected and is supported by the majority of the Bolivian masses. His administration has instituted massive, progressive reforms in the country. Evo has tirelessly opposed U.S. intervention in Bolivia and in Latin America. Bolivia has been at the forefront of the struggle against climate change in Latin America.

Bolivia is rich in its natural resources so it is a prime target for the imperialists. U.S. imperialism strives to unseat popular, progressive leaders and install puppet governments that will do the U.S.’s bidding in pursuit of capital and global dominance.

James Baldwin Documentary Has Relevance in the United States Today

https://fighting-words.net/2019/11/04/james-baldwin-documentary-has-relevance-in-the-united-states-today/

James Baldwin

Within the theater while the documentary was running people began to applaud Baldwin’s words which were spoken nearly five decades ago.

Race and the American Crisis in the 21st Century

Consequently, the evoking of these searing questions still has much relevance for the current period in the U.S. The ascendancy of the Trump administration has made many whites comfortable to express their greatest fears through racist demagogy and practices.

This film by Peck makes an important contribution in fostering a dialogue about race, class and social justice. It is good to see Baldwin, who was a highly visible figure in the 1960s and 1970s both through the print media and mass communications outlets, almost resurrected through this documentary. Baldwin died from cancer in France on December 1, 1987.

Similar voices such as Baldwin’s are needed today. This film raises the question as to who are the public intellectuals in the America of the second decade of the 21st century; those activists and thinkers that are immersed in the burning and pressing issues of the day.

This inquiry can only be answered by the younger generation which has recognized the need to continue the revolution to its completion. How this is to be done remains a chapter to be written for the annals of the future.
