The world lost one of the greatest writers of our time when Toni Morrison died this year. This doc, filmed before her death, is an ode to her groundbreaking work as a multi-award-winning writer and her life story from childhood through the civil rights movement and beyond, offering an intimate look at race and humanity in America. Both a meditation on African-American art and Morrison’s story in her own words, this film reminds us that the strength of her spirit remains.

(check out IDOC Watch at idocwatch.org)

Rally / Public Hearing for ICEoutofMKE

(ESPAÑOL ABAJO)

Please join us! Your voice has the power to change how the Milwaukee Police Department interacts with ICE.

What: Rally and Public Hearing at City Hall

When: Thursday, October 31st at 5pm (hearing at 5:30pm)

Why: Finally, after months of community pressure, the Fire and Police Commission (FPC) has scheduled a hearing to consider our recommended changes to SOP, changes that would bar collaboration between MPD and ICE unless there is a judicial warrant.

There will be an initial vote on SOP130 to determine if it passes to the full committee for another and final vote. We are so close to getting this pass and seeing a policy change that would protect immigrant families in Milwaukee.

Last public hearing we were limited to only 5 speakers. Not this time, so let’s get our message across!

Invader or Invaded: “WE DIDN’T CROSS THE BORDER, THE BORDER CROSSED US.”

https://fighting-words.net/2019/10/16/invader-or-invaded/

By Cassandra Devereaux

Vicente Guerrero was the first descendant of African slaves to serve as a North American head of state. He was a general in the war for Mexico’s independence from the Spanish Empire, and was Mexico’s second President. Under his administration, he issued a decree abolishing slavery throught Mexico’s territories. The idea of ending their use of chattel slavery did not sit well with everybody. In late 1835, one of the northern territories declared independence and through force of arms, successfully seceded from Mexico several months later, and continued to use slave labor. In 1845, this former Mexican territory was annexed into the United States as the State of Texas. It was in El Paso, a city on the border of Texas and its former national home of Mexico that a white 21 year old killer named Patrick Crusius came with assault rifles and body armor. He carefully targeted Latinx shoppers and murdered 22 individuals, wounding dozens more. The shooter, a white man, left behind a manifesto which repeatedly referred to the Latinx population as “invaders….”

Ode to the (Chicago Teachers Union) Big Bargaining team

By dstieber, Sunday, October 20, 2019 at 9:09 am

Ode to the Big Bargaining team

To the pushers of equity
40 plus of you
who have sacrificed
time with your loved ones
time for yourselves
for sleep
Since last winter
you’ve been trying to negotiate
You watch politicians make up lies
Lies about you
Say you are undemocratic
Say you are moving slow
You sit there
Knowing first hand
that this city doesn’t care
about our kids
with its “proposals”
lack there of
City says no money
No money for Black/Brown kids
You must want to jump across the table
Call them liars
Yell out “how dare you?”
You’re forced to watch the same lawyer
who worked for Daley
then Rahm
now Lightfoot
negotiate for the city
The lawyer whose orders are to save money
to ignore what our kids need
You see how this city opens up its accounts
for private developers
for policing
but then cries broke
when it’s for Black/Brown kids
You know from experience
to never trust this city
The city says a lot of things
You’ve heard the promises before
Their “just trust” us pleas
You’ve seen the devastation
You’ve worked in this system
Fought to create a new system
You’ve heard 6 year olds
beg
to keep their schools open
You’ve seen parents
hunger strike
for over 30 days
to get a school open
Know that while you are
advocating for our students
our schools
our city
demanding contracts
We are out here picketing/protesting/striking
While you are holed up in conference rooms
we will keep holding down on the picket line
Know that we aren’t going to go back easily
We want everything our kids deserve
We see you
We thank you
We support you
Thank you for fighting
to make our city better
for holding Chicago accountable
