Gichi-gami Gathering to Stop Line 3

On Saturday, September 28th, we’ll come together on the shores of Gichi-gami — Lake Superior — to stand up against the proposed Enbridge Line 3 tar sands pipeline.

Complete details, including registration and bus information on event website: www.gichigamigathering.com

Schedule of the day
12:00-1:30pm – Arrivals (welcome drums, registration, snacks, vendors, kids’ activities)
1:30-2:30pm – Rally with speakers
2:30-4:00pm – March to protect Gichi-gami
4:00-5:45pm – Gathering (round dance for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women / MMIW, community meal, educational workshops, music by Jeffrey James, silk screening, vendors, community organizations, interactive art)
5:45pm Closing Prayer and Travel Song
6:00pm Farewell

Enbridge’s Line 3 project would pump the world’s dirtiest oil from Canada to Superior, crossing Ojibwe treaty land, wild rice lakes, and the headwaters of the Mississippi River. It would have the climate change impact of 50 coal power plants.

This past June, the Minnesota Court of Appeals threw out Line 3’s environmental review because the spill risks to Lake Superior were never even studied. Meanwhile, Enbridge is doing pre-construction for the pipeline, even with lawsuits, expert recommendations, tribal nations, community groups, and presidential candidates lining up against the project.

Now is the time to gather at Gichi-gami and raise our voices so that Governor Walz, our state agencies, and all Minnesotans can hear. We need to protect this Great Lake and stop this toxic pipeline.

Together, we’ll rally, march, and celebrate the community of resistance that has brought us this far. This will be a powerful day. No matter your background or experience, there is a place for you in this movement. Bring everyone — Gichi-gami Gathering to Stop Line 3 is a family-friendly event.

This event follows the Global Climate Strike, a youth-led week of action to demand climate justice for everyone and an end to the age of fossil fuels. Building Line 3 would lock us into 50 more years of climate crisis level emissions from the Canadian tar sands. Join one of the Global Climate Strikes on September 20th in your own community, then come from near or far on the 28th to Gichi-gami to protect the water and say no to this pipeline that affects us all.

Route & Logistic details TBA.

From the day he took office, Donald Trump escalated a failed and cruel immigration policy into an all-out war against immigrants, banning Muslims, slamming the door on refugees, tearing children from their parents’ arms.

Each new affront has been met with outrage and protest, but even when he has retreated, Trump has sought new lines of attack: concentration camps, workplace raids, new bars to green cards and citizenship.

Meanwhile many immigrants are being terrorized in their own communities, afraid to answer the door, take children to school, or go to work. These communities need to see and feel the solidarity of the majority that stands with them.

We call on all those who oppose the raids, family separation, deportations and incarceration to unite against this reign of racist persecution.

It is time to say, “¡Basta Ya!” Enough is enough!

On Sunday, October 20th, let us act together against those who would give us a future of division and white supremacist hate. Let us unite together people of faith, unions, anti-racist fighters, climate activists, youth activists and other progressives to target Trump’s anti-immigrant, deportation machinery.

Let us act in the knowledge that no human being is illegal anywhere, not least in a country formed through violent colonialism.

Most of all let us open our arms to immigrants in our country or at our borders with a greeting of friendship.

Global call for climate action on September 27, 2019

http://www.industriall-union.org/global-call-for-climate-action-on-27-september

Read this article in:

IndustriALL Global Union is calling on affiliates to take action on 27 September as part of the worldwide movement to combat climate change.

A global week of climate action has been declared for 20-27 September 2019. These dates bracket an important United Nations summit on climate change.

IndustriALL’s general secretary, Valter Sanches, says:

“IndustriALL Global Union has fought for a Just Transition to a sustainable future for many years. It is time to make our point most strongly, again. Our futures, and those of our children, depend on it.”

IndustriALL affiliates are encouraged to undertake their own initiatives on 27 September, or to integrate their actions with other unions and/or their national centres.

What can affiliates do?

  • Publicly express strong support for the Paris Agreement of COP21, and the Silesia Declaration on Just Transition of COP24
  • Demand comprehensive Just Transition programmes to reach a sustainable future while leaving no worker behind
  • Put pressure on companies responsible for global warming to pay for remediation and the Just Transition for workers and communities
  • Put pressure on politicians to define sustainable industrial policies that put the public interest first; and on business people to urgently take action to cut greenhouse gas emissions
  • Demand that politicians define the specific and concrete steps that will be taken to address climate change. The areas that need urgent attention are energy, transportation, buildings, and finance.

A list of some of the events being organized during the week of action can be found here https://globalclimatestrike.net/#join  – please join us, or organize you own!

“The climate crisis is real, it is urgent, and it is a threat to working people and communities. The crisis has social and economic dimensions not just environmental ones. The bridge to a sustainable future and a stable climate is a Just Transition that protects workers, their families, and the communities that depend on them,” says Valter Sanches.

Separated Family Whose Provider Was Ripped From Them by ICE and the Milwaukee Police Needs Help, Make a Much Need Monetary Contribution to Assist Family

Click here to make a contribution: https://bit.ly/2kRqbNO

My husband, and the father of our three children was ripped from our family on Monday, September 23, 2019.

Our family was harrasessed, traumatized, and torn apart as the Milwaukee Police Department colaborated with ICE which lead to the detention of my husband Jose Alejandro (Alex) De la Cruz- Espinoza . There was no warrant present at any time.

We didn’t even have a chance to say goodbye, or give him one last hug.

Alex was the sole financial provider for our family.  He worked hard, and loved his family and three daughters. He was working on getting citizenship and doing right in life.

All I can focus is on my immediate needs, providing for my daughters, and keeping my family together.  This is a very difficult moment for us, emotionally and financially. I just spent the last $15 I had on gas.

Money raised will allow us to cover costs that can prevent my husbands deportation and help me provide for my family in the meantime.

Thank you for your support and donation.

⚡Phone Zap⚡to Get Comrade Pitt Out of Solitary 9/26/19! Make ’em ring all day long!

Background

On May 6, 2019, the ACLU and attorneys from White & Case LLP, on behalf of 21 prisoners at Red Onion and Wallen’s Ridge, filed a federal class action lawsuit against the Virginia Department of Corrections (VDOC) seeking to end those prisons’ practice of solitary confinement. You can read more about the case and the practice of solitary confinement as torture at Red Onion and Wallen’s Ridge here. https://acluva.org/en/cases/thorpe-et-al-v-virginia-department-corrections-et-al

On 7/30, Peter Kamau Mukuria (Comrade Pitt) was put in solitary confinement at Red Onion as retaliation for his involvement in the lawsuit and for filing numerous complaints. He was at first charged with inciting a riot at the end of in-pod recreation that morning. There was no riot. Comrade Pitt appealed, and rather than dropping the charge, the warden reduced it to inciting a “group demonstration”. This did not happen either. The warden knows that dropping the charge would give credence to Comrade Pitt’s claim that he was put in solitary as retaliation for taking legal action against the prison administration. If Comrade Pitt incited a riot or demonstration on 7/30, the video footage of the pod should corroborate Correction Officer T. O’Quinn’s account of what happened. However, neither the warden nor the hearing officer mentioned video evidence. Comrade Pitt appealed his case to the regional administrator. He needs needs supporters to call and ask that the regional chief of operation review the video footage, which will show that Officer O’Quinn’s claim is false.

CALL

Henry Ponton, Regional Chief of Operations

Script

Hi, I am calling in regard to Peter Mukuria (ID #1197165), an inmate at Red Onion Prison. Officers at Red Onion allege that Mr. Mukuria incited a group demonstration at the end of in-pod recreation on July 30, 2019. Mr. Mukuria maintains that this charge is false, yet he remains in solitary confienment as punishment despite a lack of evidence supporting the correctional officer’s claim. I request that Chief Henry Ponton review the video footage from 7/30/2019 between the hours of 8am and 9am in Housing Unit Delta 5. He will see for himself that at no point did anyone incite a riot or participate in a group demonstration at the end of in-pod rec. Peter Mukuria walked directly to his assigned cell after finishing his phone call. If he reviews this footage he will see that the charge of inciting a group demonstration is fabricated. Thank you for your time.

CAUGHT ON VIDEO: THE MILWAUKEE POLICE DEPARTMENT COLLABORATES WITH ICE

https://vdlf.org/caught-on-video-the-milwaukee-police-department-collaborates-with-ice/

MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN – On Monday, September 23, 2019, Jose Alejandro De la Cruz- Espinoza, a Milwaukee resident, was with his wife and three young daughters inside his vehicle parked outside of his home when he was barricaded and torn from his family by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.

Two staff members from Voces de la Frontera responded to De la Cruz’ hotline call and promptly went to his location, 5th and Becher Street to verify his report. There they witnessed first-hand the apprehension of De la Cruz by ICE, in collaboration with the Milwaukee Police Department (MPD).

Describing the encounter with ICE agents, his wife relived the experience saying, “they wouldn’t let us say goodbye, they wouldn’t let us hug him. Nothing.” She told Voces staff, “they physically dragged my daughters out of the car, and they did not provide a search warrant. They terrorized my family.”

His daughter, visibly traumatized and holding back tears, explained, “they took him and now I don’t know what to do.” Her sister added while sobbing, “they wouldn’t let me hug him.”

“This is evidence that Milwaukee Police Department is collaborating with ICE,” said Christine Neumann-Ortiz, Executive Director of Voces de la Frontera. “If MPD collaborates with ICE in this environment,  when the Trump administration is escalating its attacks on immigrant and refugee families, it only undermines confidence and trust in reaching out to local law enforcement when they need to. This fear and mistrust of local law enforcement extends to children in these households who are living through a deportation of a parent or a raid. This is why the Fire & Police Commission members must vote to strengthen MPD policy against ICE collaboration.”

“The last thing I want to see is the chilling effect when people are reaching out for help,” said Melissa Soberalski, an immigration attorney working with the De la Cruz family. “As a lawyer that works with victims of crime such as domestic abuse, sexual assault, trafficking, and other forms of violence, it’s essential that these individuals feel safe to report crimes to authorities and have access to pathways for protections. There needs to be a protocol change within the Milwaukee Police Department because they’re not doing what they’re saying they’re doing.”

Voces de la Frontera invites the community to take a stand against family separation, the terrorization of immigrant communities, and the dehumanization that happens when local law enforcement collaborates with ICE. We demand the MPD immediately end collaboration with ICE and to vote in favor of an amended Standard Operating Procedure on Immigration (SOP130) to include specific language that ensures the MPD does not collaborate with or assist ICE.

Take action and join us this Thursday, September 26 at 4:30 pm at City Hall, Milwaukee, for a press conference and public hearing at 5:30 pm before the Fire and Police Commission Standards and Policy Committee votes to amend SOP130 to strengthen language for non-collaboration.

Milwaukee, September 26, 2019: CLOSEmsdf Picket

Image may contain: 3 people, people standing, child, tree, crowd, shoes and outdoor

CLOSEmsdf September Picket

901 N 9th Street, 11:30 A.M. – 1 P.M., Milwaukee County Courthouse

Why do we picket?
1. To educate people on the inhumane conditions at MSDF.
2. To memorialize the 18 people who have died in MSDF since it opened.
3. To let WI taxpayers know that each day someone spends in MSDF for a crimeless rule violation costs us $100.84 vs $40 to treat that person in the community where their job, housing & support systems stay secure.
4. To hold Governor Tony Evers to his campaign promises. He told the Journal Sentinel he thinks MSDF should close “as soon as possible”. It is possible right now, and he can do it himself, with a few just and necessary policy changes.
