During this current period of economic and public health crises along with the eruption of mass demonstrations, urban rebellions and sharpening debates around the objective nature of the state and the capitalist-imperialist system, the work of Dr. Rodney becomes even more relevant.Before Walter Rodney was assassinated he was a renowned Pan-African and socialist theorist on the Bolshevik Revolution and its relationship to Africa’s post-colonial legacy. Abayomi Azikiwe will lead the discussion. His scholarly approach will allow us to find insights and create a deeper understanding of this extraordinary work.

ABOUT WALTER RODNEY

In his short life, Guyanese intellectual Walter Rodney emerged as one of the foremost thinkers and activists of the anti-colonial revolution, leading movements in North America, Africa, and the Caribbean. Wherever he was, Rodney was a lightning rod for working-class Black Power organizing. His deportation sparked Jamaica’s Rodney Riots in 1968, and his scholarship trained a generation how to approach politics on an international scale. In 1980, shortly after founding the Working People’s Alliance in Guyana, the thirty-eight-year-old Rodney was assassinated.This class is presented by the Communist Workers League of Detroit.

Our government has failed to provide for working people during this pandemic–whether we are unemployed or underemployed, or working a frontline job.
Our own Senator Ron Johnson supported cutting the $600 federal supplemental unemployment benefits, saying it would be a disincentive to work- even when millions are out of work and jobs are few and far between. Senator Johnson thinks $600 a week in unemployment ($15/hr) is more than working families deserve, but is fine with millionaires and billionaires raking in money while we struggle to survive.We will join together to demand the unemployment support, hazard pay, and a living wage, so that our homes, our hunger, and our health are cared for as all working people deserve.

Trestletree Village is a project-based Section 8 housing complex in Atlanta, GA. Trestletree tenants are organizing to demand better treatment from Monroe Group, the company that owns and manages the property. For years, tenants have faced:
 

• Excessive and unfounded lease violations
• Near-uninhabitable living conditions, including mold and sewage issues
• Ignored maintenance requests
• Eviction threats

After a successful resident rally on September 24, Trestletree management/Monroe Group retaliated by banning the Housing Justice League, Parkside Equity Coalition and other non-tenant tenant organizers from the property. They also asked Kingdom Life Church to no longer serve the Trestletree neighborhood through their food pantry.
 
These are blatant violations of U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) policy, and Monroe Group will face consequences for their actions.

Cuban News Agency (ACN), September 28, 2020- Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez, Cuban president, called on Sunday on Twitter a basic act of historical justice the diplomatic relations between the Caribbean island and China.
The president recalled on the aforementioned social media that the Caribbean nation was the first country in the Western hemisphere to establish relations with the People’s Republic of China.
Last June, the Cuban diplomatic mission to China presented a program of activities being carried out in both countries to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of relations, to be celebrated September 28.
