US on the cusp of change that will have global implications

Monday, 07 September 2020 6:13 PM  [Last Update: Monday, 07 September 2020 6:20 PM]

By Abayomi Azikiwe

The situation in Portland (in Oregon) is critical to the overall struggle against police violence, institutional racism in the United States. People have been demonstrating for over 100 days. They have faced down local police, federal agents that were deployed by the Trump White House. And they’ve also had to battle the psychological warfare and the propaganda, that’s been leveled at the demonstrators by the corporate media, along with the Trump administration.

This is not isolated to Portland; it’s happening all over the United States. People are fed up with police brutality, and quite frankly, they’re responding to the social crisis that exists in the United States.

Right now, the situation is complicated, because there’s less than two months before the national presidential election. Trump is desperate to win a second term and is willing to continue its massive transfer of wealth from working the people and poor people to the top ruling interest in the United States.

And the administration is using everything, including voter suppression, they’re attempting to dismantle the United States Post Office because due to the pandemic a lot of people have to vote via mail, and he’s also labeling the cities where people have been protesting against police brutality, as anarchists have lost control and he’s wanting to cut off federal funding to the cities.

And he’s also sent in federal troops and vehicles to the various cities. Here in Detroit where I’m, they have what is called operation legend, to be placed in cities across the United States where they’re sending in federal agents. Ostensibly that’s the plan, but we know that they’re here to monitor the developments of the demonstrations.

So people have to continue to be vigilant, because otherwise, if the administration is able to disenfranchise millions of people to repress legitimate free speech and assembly and to continue their war on the working people and the poor and African Americans, the situation will be almost unbearable in the United States.

I believe the consciousness level of people in United States is rising, and therefore it is creating panic on Wall Street, as well as the Trump White House. So it’s going to continue. And I believe that there will be major changes coming up in the next few months here in the United States that will have global implications.

The Stage Is Set For A Venezuela October Surprise

https://bit.ly/35h55NR

By: Leonardo Flores On: September 2, 2020

Caracas (VZA– Aggression against Venezuela from the US has intensified in recent weeks and all signs are pointing towards an escalation ahead of elections in the US and Venezuela.

The hybrid war against Venezuela is intensifying as the US presidential campaign is heating up. The Trump administration and its Venezuelan and international allies have set the stage for an October surprise, a possible attack by the United States or one of its proxies designed to boost President Trump’s reelection. The attacks on Venezuela are coming from multiple dimensions, including overt military pressure, economic pressure, covert operations, and disinformation campaigns. All of these are elements of a hybrid war that has sought to overthrow the government of President Nicolás Maduro over the past years, and each element has seen new developments over the past few weeks, just as Venezuela is battling a surge in COVID-19 cases.

Overt military pressure

The US naval deployment to Venezuela’s maritime border is about to begin its fifth month of operations in the area. Even the few Democrats in Congress willing to criticize Trump’s Venezuela policy have said nothing about this deployment, perhaps because it is entirely normal for the United States to threaten war on a country and then dock its Navy right outside. The silence from Democrats is unfortunate, as this could easily have been used as an example of the Pentagon’s wastefulness. Deploying a massive “counter-narcotics” operation to the Caribbean, when 84% of the cocaine in the US transits through the Pacific, could be low-hanging fruit in the debate to cut military spending.

In Colombia, President Iván Duque met with National Security Advisor Robert O’Brien and Head of US Southern Command Craig Faller on  August 18, where they announced the Colombia Growth Initiative, a multi-billion-dollar plan that O’Brien says is “focused on rural development, infrastructure expansion, security, and the rule of law,” though the announcement was short on details. Two days after the visit with US officials, Duque baselessly accused Venezuela of trying to acquire medium and long-range missiles from Iran. Both Iran and Venezuela denied the allegations…. https://geopoliticsalert.com/

Stand with Steelworkers at Fisher Cast!

#USWUnity

Members of USW Local 2342 at Fisher Cast Steel Products in West Jefferson, Ohio are facing a tough fight in their contract negotiations.

The company is trying to strip away their most fundamental protections and rights, such as union recognition, seniority, just cause discipline and arbitration.

Fisher Cast Steel Products received hundreds of thousands of taxpayers’ dollars from the federal COVID-19 relief fund.

This funding is meant to help small businesses during this trying time and support good jobs in our community. The company benefited from taxpayers’ money and yet wants to attack good, union jobs.

Add your name to pledge your solidarity with USW Local 2342 workers who are fighting for fairness and good jobs at Fisher Cast Steel Products. http://usw.to/StandWFisherCast

Rest In Power Kevin Zeese

PopularResistance.org

It is with a sad heart that I report the sudden and unexpected death of Kevin Zeese early Sunday morning. Kevin was working up until the end and died in his sleep of a possible heart attack.

Kevin was going to write a newsletter this weekend about the extradition trial of Julian Assange, which begins today. Kevin understood the great importance of the prosecution of Julian Assange as a battle that will define journalism in the 21st century and our right to know.

He was helping to organize an online event featuring Daniel Ellsberg, James Goodale and Chris Hedges, moderated by Sue Udry. As far as I know, that event will still take place. You can register for it here. The Facebook page for it is here.

You can read the June 28th newsletter we wrote about Julian Assange, “Government Attacks Media as Peoples Media Reveals the Truth.”

Please follow the trial, spread the word about it and do what you can to support Assange. I know that Consortium News will be following it closely. His partner and the mother of his two sons, Stella Moris, launched a crowdfunding campaign for legal support.

Tributes to Kevin are already being posted. Here are a few:

Kevin fought to bring truth every day. We must not lose this struggle.

I will do my best to keep Popular Resistance going and strive to maintain the high quality that Kevin brought to it. I will inform you of the details of the online tribute his sons and I are planning and a way we can honor him and keep his legacy growing, as he deserves.

Rest in power, Kevin Zeese.

Support City Workers in Virginia Beach, VA

Would you consider making a donation to support historic organizing opportunity with city workers across Virginia?

“Trash is what we do, it’s not who we are,” stated Red McClenny.

On August 19, over 100 sanitation workers in the City of Virginia Beach shut down work for the day, refused to load into their trucks, demanding hazard pay. Amidst this global COVID-19 pandemic, essential workers everywhere deserve to be paid for risking their lives to come to work. They then packed City Hall, spoke out and won $1,500 hazard pay bonus — but there is still so much more they deserve.
Read article on it here.

This is also a historic moment.  There was both a strike and a change in the law in Virginia that will allow city workers to COLLECTIVELY BARGAIN starting in May 2021.  This is an opportunity that public workers in NC and VA have NEVER had and was taken away during the Jim Crow era.   This is especially important as the rising movements against systematic racism are advancing because these are workplace composed of mostly Black workers.

UE has been undergoing new strategies of pre-majority unionism across North Carolina and Virginia for over 20 years, but now needs the support of the movement to garner resources to organize municipal workers in Virginia Beach and across the state. This could be a watershed moment for public sector workers in the South and we don’t want it to pass by without a serious organizing campaign.

The Southern Workers Assembly appeals to you to reach deep, to make a donation to support organizing municipal workers in this strategic Southern state.
