What we know so far about Kevin’s death includes a lot of what we don’t know. Lots of unanswered questions, conflicting statements, misinformation, and the ultimate unknown – why?

What we do know is this:

On the morning of August 12th, 2024, Kevin called 911 for help. On the recording of the 911 call, he can be heard saying “We have no contact orders, and we saw each other, and he tried to break my neck.” Kevin sounds scared and out of breath on the recording. The 911 operator asks Kevin where he’s located – he says
“nevermind” and hangs up.

Fitchburg Police are dispatched to the location of the call. They entered the home of Kevin, his partner, and their roommate after a witness reported a couple fighting inside. Kevin’s partner and their dog are removed from the residence by police. His partner told the Wisconsin State Journal that their roommate was not at their residence at the time. Police went back into their residence and Kevin’s partner tells officers outside that Kevin is in their bedroom closet with a knife. They relay the information to officers inside.
Kevin’s partner stated that moments later he heard shouting, then gunshots.

A little over an hour after calling for help, Kevin was shot 3 times in the chest by a Fitchburg Police Officer.

Kevin was taken to St. Mary’s hospital. He reportedly had 2 surgeries while he was in the hospital and at one time is noted by police to be in “stable condition”. He died 3 days after being shot, alone. His family wasn’t notified of what happened until after he was gone.

Fitchburg Police have refused to release records related to the incident – including bodycam footage reported to exist by the Department of Justice. Fitchburg Police withheld the 911 call information, reporting it as a “911 disconnect”. Information about the call had to be obtained by an Isthmus reporter through Dane County Dispatch.

SSM Health has not shared records of what happened to Kevin at the hospital, despite their request, citing the ongoing police investigation. It is unclear why the family was not contacted by the hospital or police in the 3 day period Kevin was in the hospital before his death.
