To date, Leonard Peltier has served nearly 50 years in prison following a trial that even the lead prosecutor, former U.S. Attorney James Reynolds, now says “was and is unjust.” With coerced witness testimony that was later recanted and crucial ballistics evidence hidden by the FBI, Mr. Peltier should not have been convicted, much less imprisoned for nearly five decades.
As the National Native American Boarding School Healing Coalition wrote in their request for granting clemency, Leonard Peltier’s incarceration did not begin in 1977. It started in 1952 when he was just nine years old. As a young child, Peltier was forcibly taken to Wahpeton Indian Boarding School and forced to assimilate to non-Native culture. To survive, Peltier sang his traditional songs and spoke his language in secret with other Native youth.
By ending Leonard’s incarceration, President Biden can make steps toward restoring the dignity of Mr. Peltier and begin healing the harm to his relatives, his Tribal Nation, and Indian Country.
