We are living in unprecedented times when immigrants and labor advocates must be more prepared than ever to defend workers’ rights. For this reason, Worker Justice Wisconsin (WJW) and the South Central Federation of Labor (SCFL) have jointly prepared trainings and flyers outlining the rights of immigrant workers and how to defend themselves against ICE and other immigration-related threats. You can find more details below.
Also important, in 2025, we will hold regular worker membership meetings—called Members’ Assemblies—on the first Tuesday of every month.
This month’s assembly is scheduled for tomorrow, February 4th, from 5–7 PM, in Room 115 of the Labor Temple and the topic will be “The Future of Immigration and Worker Rights.” Please join us! Mark your calendars for the General Assembly (Asamblea General) on Tuesday, March 4th.
This event combines our Annual Board Meeting with the Members’ Assembly to review 2024, decide on actions we’ll take in 2025, and elect new board members. If you attend one meeting this year, let it be this one. Additional information, including the draft agenda, is provided below. In these scary times, the inclination is to shelter in place, but now more than ever, we must exercise our collective voice for worker justice. Our power derives from our solidarity. Come to the membership meetings, attend the immigration trainings, and let’s use this space to talk about what we will do together to fight for immigrant justice, for living and reliable wages, and for just representation in every workplace.
Protecting Against ICE: Trainings, Flyers, and Red Cards Available Now
WJW Program Director Robert Christl and SCFL Organizer Issy Bilek are leading the Immigration and Labor Working Group to ensure unions are prepared to confront the anti-immigration rhetoric and policies of the current administration. If you’d like to learn more about the Labor Working Group, you can reach out to Robert at robert@workerjustice.org or Issy at issy@scfl.org. They’ve developed three critical immigration-related trainings for workers and the labor community that they can offer to your organization or train your members to lead. They have also developed three flyers that explain what to do and not do in situations involving ICE or during other confrontational situations. You can access the flyers on our website. Contact Robert or Issy if you would like to receive one or all of their trainings. Lastly, we have Red Cards in both English and Spanish available to pick up at WJW’s office. These cards help you assert your rights and protect yourself if ICE shows up at your home or workplace. If you are an immigrant or an ally, come by our office at 1602 S Park St, #115, any weekday between 9 AM and 5 PM to pick up a Red Card. ACCESS ANTI-ICE FLYERS →
Save the Date: WJW General Assembly on March 4
On March 4, WJW will hold our most important meeting of the year: the General Assembly. This event combines our Annual Board Meeting and the monthly Worker Membership Meeting (Members’ Assembly), marking another major step toward becoming a truly worker-led organization.
We will share updates on WJW’s successes and challenges throughout 2024, providing both the community and the workers who comprise its membership with a comprehensive view of the worker center as we go into 2025. We will also engage in a collective discussion about wage theft and recommit to our campaign for its elimination in South-Central Wisconsin, vote on membership dues, and elect new board members from the worker membership. The top worker member candidates for the board are Lilia Garcia and Diana Mercedes Murcia, who came directly from collective workplace struggles for better working conditions. Here’s the draft agenda for the meeting: Brief presentation of minutes from the previous meeting Wage Theft Campaign updates Topic of discussion: Why are Hispanic immigrants targeted for wage theft? 2024 Annual Report Voting in new Board Members Voting on key items, including membership dues All worker members are invited to contribute to the agenda. Please submit proposed items to Socorro Cortez at socorro@workerjustice.org by February 21.
