UWM STUDENTS’ SAFETY THREATENED BY PRO-ISRAEL GROUP: BETAR PROMOTING A DISRUPTION OF PROF. FINKELSTEIN SPEAKING EVENT
[Milwaukee, WI] Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) is hosting Professor Norman Finkelstein for a ‘moderated discussion’ on Thursday, February 6th at UW-Milwaukee’s Wisconsin Room. In response, the local chapter of Betar, a far-right militant Zionist youth movement, has publicly stated its intent to disrupt the event on X (formerly Twitter).
Betar Milwaukee has a history of targeting pro-Palestine students, including past intimidation campaigns against SJP members, such as distributing threatening flyers on campus and threatening to ‘give beepers’ to students in October 2024—a term linked to Israeli attacks in Lebanon. Betar has also expressed that they will be “hand[ing] out beepers” during their disruption of the upcoming event. Given these ongoing threats and plans to disrupt the event, SJP has requested additional security from UWMPD to ensure the safety of students, faculty, community members, and Professor Finkelstein.
