Dear Community, Today we learned of the cruel torture and murder of Sam Nordquist, a 24 year old Black Trans man from Minnesota. We are heartbroken and our spirits deeply disturbed. Sam was a young person and endured so much pain before he died.
Black Trans people suffer heinous acts of violence in their daily lives, AND it is not lost on us that the recent anti-Trans policies from the [Dump] Trump administration have emboldened bigots to act out their hatred of our Trans community members.
Sam deserved to live. But instead, his family and community are grieving him right now.
At Freedom, Inc., we know that Trans people are inherently valuable and deserve to live happy lives free of violence. We know that one Trans life lost in this manner is too many. Our deepest sympathies go out to the family and community Sam loved and that loved Sam in return.
Join us on Friday, February 21st for a candlelight vigil here in Madison as we honor Sam’s life. More details about location to come.

Dear community, We are beyond angry and heartbroken as we learn about the brutal murder of yet another Black Trans woman. Tahiry “Tokyo” Broom was only 29 when she was killed while visiting Michigan earlier this month. Tahiry should still be here with us today. We believe EVERY Black woman in our community deserves love, respect, and safety.
According to an article published in by PGH Lesbian Correspondents on February 14th, “Tahiry was born on March 1, 1995 in Cleveland, Ohio. According to her social media, she enjoyed pretty things, was a self-described shopaholic and unabashedly earning money to buy things. She was a fan of Nicki Minaj and Rihanna. She liked Forever 21 and Hot Topic. She was a vibrant young woman who enjoyed life. Tahiry was also known as Tokyo.”
Join us as we honor Tahiry Broom’s life and legacy on Friday, February 21st, at 6pm here in Madison. Location details to come.
