The AFL-CIO released a statement on Jan. 28 decrying President Trump’s firing of National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) member Gwynne Wilcox and NLRB General Counsel Jennifer Abruzzo.
“President Trump’s firing of NLRB member Gwynne Wilcox, the first Black woman to serve on the board, is illegal and will have immediate consequences for working people,” said AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler. “Member Wilcox has already indicated she will challenge her firing, and we fully expect she will succeed in the courts and be restored to her position so she can continue to be a critical pro-worker voice on the NLRB.”
NLRB members’ right to retain their seats for their full five-year terms, even through changing presidential administrations, has never been questioned and is, in fact, protected by nearly 90 years of Supreme Court caselaw. Workers depend on the NLRB to uphold their rights; this action leaves the agency unable to function effectively and harms the people whom Congress long-ago intended the NLRB to protect.
