UPDATE AND HELP NEEDED TO FREE MAHMOUD KHALIL »
March 21, 2025 is Mahmoud Khalil’s hearing in immigration court, and we urgently need to ramp up calls to U.S. lawmakers to urge them to put pressure on the Trump administration to release him from detention immediately. Thanks for taking action already. Tens of thousands from Amnesty have joined you in highlighting Mahmoud’s case. Can you send another letter to remind your senators and representative to act?

Here’s what you need to know: On March 8th, ICE agents unlawfully arrested and arbitrarily detained Mahmoud Khalil, a Palestinian activist and recent graduate of Columbia University. He was targeted for his role in student protests at Columbia last year, and his arrest comes on the heels of the State Department’s announcement that it plans to revoke the visas or green cards and deport students affiliated with pro-Palestine protests. He has not been charged with any crime. Mahmoud is expecting his first child with his wife next month. He should be home right now, not held in a notoriously cruel detention facility far from his family, community, and lawyers.

Ismail: this targeting of Mahmoud Khalil is an unlawful and outrageous effort by the Trump administration to persecute dissent — and it sends a chilling message to everyone in the U.S., especially immigrants, that if they exercise their human rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, they could be subject to repression, detention, and possibly deportation. So many people are already living in extreme fear due to President Trump’s anti-immigrant attacks, including ICE raids and arrests, family detention and separation, and deportations. People are not seeking critical medical care. They are avoiding going to school. They are not reporting crimes to law enforcement agencies. Many are so fearful they are not even leaving their homes. But all of us — no matter how much the Trump administration tries to deny it — have a right to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, and due process. Amnesty is fighting to protect these rights — it’s why we need to speak out for Mahmoud and it’s why we need to speak out for everyone whose rights are coming under attack under this administration. Join us. Thank you for lending your voice to this urgent case. Sincerely,
