Yale pro-Palestine group stripped of status after protesters pitch tents to oppose appearance by Israeli security minister

NEW HAVEN — Yale University stripped one of the groups that organized a pro-Palestinian protest Tuesday night of its status as an official student organization, the school and organizers said Wednesday.

The protest was related to Wednesday’s planned off-campus appearance by Israeli Minister of National Security Itamar Ben-Gvir. Yale claims the group violated university rules, the group said.

“Yale’s leadership has focused on selectively repressing student speech,” the organizers said in a written statement.

“Despite admitting to campus press that a protest against Ben Gvir on Tuesday night ‘was not affiliated with any recognized student organizations,’ university officials stripped Yalies4Palestine, Yale’s chapter of the national organization Students for Justice in Palestine, of its status as an official student organization at 3 PM today,” the statement said.

“As New Haveners fight genocide, Yale fights its students,” it said.

The move came after Pro-Palestinian Yale protesters briefly pitched eight tents on Beinecke Plaza in front of the Yale University administration building Tuesday night, reestablishing an encampment for the first time in nearly a year.
