Pittsburgh: On May Day 2025, the longest strike in the US marches on

Pittsburgh Post Gazette Workers:

As we roll out of our beds and get started with our collective Thursdays we might find ourselves feeling more empowered than usual. That’s because it is International Workers’ Day, better known as May Day.

Originally conceived as a mass movement in support of more favorable working conditions, such as the eight-hour work day, May Day has a radical present and history that brings workers together in our collective fight.

Here in Pittsburgh, our fight and unfair labor practice strike against the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has flipped over to its 925th day.

That’s 925 days of fighting for the restoration of our collective bargaining agreement that was illegally stolen from us. The bosses at the Post-Gazette decided that our health care plan was “too rich”, that our short-term disability plan and the protections that it offered was “too generous”, and that a guaranteed 40 hour work week left the bosses with no “flexibility”.

But this has also been 925 days of fighting for each other. That’s 925 days of standing next to each other on picket lines in defiance of those same bosses or the cops and private security they hire to break our picket lines and dwindle our support. That’s 925 days of support from the community to show us that our fight is righteous and show us that we have the ability to see this fight through.

Earlier this week, we were delivered yet another court victory, as the Post-Gazette’s bogus appeal attempts were shot down. As we’re writing this, however, management is still refusing to follow the court’s orders, reinstate our health care and come to the bargaining table in actual, real good faith to reach a new collective bargaining agreement.

Can you help continue our fight by making a donation to our strike relief fund? This is money that goes directly to striking workers to help pay rents, mortgages, vet bills, car repairs, and any other emergency that comes up.

On May Day 2025, our fight marches on. We still need the support of you, and the community that has stood alongside us for 925 days, to see this through.

The Post-Gazette bosses think they can wait us out. Surely they thought we’d have quit by now. But they can’t know what we know — just how seriously we take the responsibility of holding them accountable, and that with support of workers like you that we’ll see this through.

So please, go find a May Day rally near you. We’ll be at the LCLLA and APALA-hosted one in Downtown Pittsburgh today. Wherever you are, we hope you can be side by side with your fellow workers today. And if you’re able, support our fight here in Pittsburgh.

In solidarity,
