MEDIA ADVISORY:  Manitowoc County Joins National John Lewis Day of Action – “Good Trouble Lives On”

Manitowoc, Wisconsin: On Thursday, July 17, community members in Manitowoc County will join Americans at hundreds of events nationwide to honor the legacy of Congressman John Lewis and fight back against the growing attacks on our civil and human rights.

The local action is part of Good Trouble Lives On — a nationwide day of peaceful nonviolent action. In Manitowoc County, immigrants have integrated into our community, playing a vital role in our economy, saving our dairy industry from extinction. A 2023 UW poll shows that 70% of labor on Wisconsin dairy farms is performed by immigrants. They are our neighbors and friends – now they live in fear.  We are those immigrants, those groups under attack by an Administration that revels in perpetrating cruelty. This is not us! This is not American.

Up to date polling shows that a large majority of Americans oppose Trump’s immigration policies and reject ICE’s brutal tactics. Yet Trump continues to excite unfounded fears over immigrants, minorities, and the increasingly diverse mosaic of our population. This deliberate attempt to sow hatred and fear must stop – and Manitowoc County groups and individuals are on the frontline of turning the tide.

A diverse line-up of speakers will offer brief remarks celebrating how minorities and immigrants enrich Manitowoc County – not just through their labor and enterprise, but through the cultural traditions, values, and stories that bind us together.

Participants will gather to demand an end to the attacks on our freedom to vote, protest, and organize — and to stand united against efforts to criminalize our communities, roll back our rights, and slash vital public programs.

Local organizers invite press to attend, capture, and uplift the voices of those taking peaceful action in defense of democracy.
