Happy Birthday Leonard Peltier!

Water Protector Legal Collective

Happy Birthday, #LeonardPeltier!

🎉

Today, we celebrate Leonard Peltier’s 81st birthday. This is first birthday as a free man in nearly five decades. After being incarcerated since 1977, Leonard walked out of prison this February after a last-minute commutation of his sentence.

Since then, Leonard has been settling into his new home on the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Reservation in North Dakota, surrounded by family, friends, and the land he fought to protect. When asked about his release, Leonard shared: “Coming from that cell to this is like… what heaven must feel like, the Great Spirit, the happy hunting ground must feel like.”

Leonard remains as steadfast as ever in his commitment to his people. “I would stand up for them again today, if it cost me the rest of my life. I don’t care. I believe what we were fighting for.”

Today, Leonard is focused on healing, reconnecting with loved ones, and advocating for the wellbeing of future generations. He’s spoken about wanting to support his people and continues to share his art, stories, and wisdom with the world.

We honor his resilience, his spirit, and his legacy. Happy Birthday, Mr. Peltier. We celebrate you, today and always!
