The threat of war against Venezuela is real. Here are four things you can do.
1. Call your senators this week (why not now?) and tell them to support the resolution by Tim Kaine and Rand Paul to prohibit military action against Venezuela without congressional approval. The Senate switchboard number is 202-224-3121. You can also get your Senators’ contact information here.
There is an imminent threat that the hybrid war against Venezuela could escalate into a full-scale hot war. Webinars and statements about the situation are good and much needed, but they are not enough. We must coordinate across organizational lines to maximize our impact.
The Trump Administration has already undertaken several strikes against boats in the Caribbean, killing at least 32 people in extrajudicial executions lacking any semblance of due process. The White House has offered no evidence that the boats it attacked were involved in narco-trafficking. There are indications that fishing boats were among those hit. Among the dead are citizens of Colombia and Trinidad in addition to Venezuelans. There is danger this conflict could escalate well beyond Venezuela’s borders. Some see the threats against Venezuela and, additionally, Colombia, as well as the sanctions and tariffs against Brazil, along with the military occupations of US cities, as different components of one hybrid war to extend the New American Fascism across the hemisphere.
There is an effort led by Democratic Senators Tim Kaine and Adam Schiff, and Republican Senator Rand Paul, to prohibit military actions against Venezuela without congressional approval. Everyone who cares about peace, democracy, and international solidarity should take action to support this effort.
Please join us today by calling your Senator and taking other steps in solidarity with the Venezuelan people. Let’s stop this war!
