Milwaukee: ACTION NEEDED: Protect Legal Counsel for Renters

A vital program for working people in Milwaukee is at risk of elimination, and we are calling on our supporters to take action.

Right to Counsel (under the Eviction Free MKE program) provides legal counsel to those facing eviction or foreclosure. This is a critical program for people who are potentially at the breaking point of experiencing homelessness.

This program is at risk of disappearing on January 1 if funding is not approved as part of next year’s city budget. An omnibus budget amendment including funding for Right to Counsel has been proposed by Alder Marina Dimitrejevic, and the Common Council will vote on this amendment on Friday, October 31.

We need you to email your alderperson and urge them to support this budget amendment in tomorrow’s vote:

Dear [insert your alderperson’s name],

I urge you to support Alderwoman Marina Dimitrejevic’s omnibus amendment, including $100,000 in funding for Eviction Free MKE, which provides legal representation to individuals facing eviction. This amendment is a critical investment in our neighborhoods. Eviction Free MKE in particular affects over 28,000 individuals, including over 12,000 children – and with an estimated $4.66 return for every dollar spent. Please support the omnibus amendment for the 2026 Milwaukee City budget!

Thanks for your support as we fight together for some of our community’s most vulnerable members.

In solidarity,
Milwaukee DSA
