Every student deserves a safe environment where they can learn without fear. Every parent deserves to take their children to school without fear of ICE. Waukesha Alderman and Catholic Memorial High School (CMH) teacher Rico Camacho acted in good faith in alerting the Waukesha community to a perceived ICE incursion. CMH then unjustly terminated Rico, highlighting the school’s disregard for its own students and parents who reasonably fear ICE presence in their community.
Voces previously posted that Catholic Memorial High School (CMH) has a written policy allowing ICE to enter the school’s premises without a judicial warrant. In fact, Voces has now learned that such policy is not actually in writing. We hereby retract and correct that statement, but we continue to assert that CMH’s unwritten policy is nonetheless the functional equivalent insofar as CMH fails to prohibit federal ICE agents from entering CMH school premises to interrogate and arrest students, parents, and staff. Moreover, CMH administrators advised Alderman Camacho when they terminated him that the Archdiocese requires all schools under its auspices to grant federal agents entry into its schools.
At a time when ICE agents are conducting mass sweeps without regard to sensitive locations such as schools and churches, it is critical to have strong protocols in place, such as Safe Haven policies. These policies affirm our rights by requiring ICE agents present a judicial warrant before interrogating anyone in or around school property.
We continue to request a meeting with CMH officials and the Archdiocese to discuss the benefits of adopting Safe Haven protocols that reflect our shared values and commitment to the safety and well-being of all students. We also support former teacher and alderman Rico Camacho, in his efforts to reach a fair agreement with CMH.
