Dec. 3 National Day of Actions against War with Venezuela / War Powers Resolution before Congress—again!

Thank you to all of you who attended, helped organize, or otherwise contributed to the No War on Venezuela! No Troops in Our Streets! Week of Actions. There were more than 100 events in the United States and 10 nations around the world.

Read the United National Antiwar Coalition report here. The war drums continue to beat ever louder. Up to now international resistance and popular mobilizations in Venezuela have kept a full on hot war from happening. This is a tooth and nail struggle. Neither war nor peace are inevitable. Once more, a bipartisan effort is before the US House of Representatives that would invoke the War Powers Resolution and stop the rush to war in the Caribbean. This is the second such effort that has come before the House, following two similar tries in the Senate. The last vote was lost by only two votes.

If you are a US resident, please write your Representative and urge them to support the McGovern/Massie/Castro War Powers Resolution   December 3rd is being called as a No War on Venezuela! National Day of Actions. Click here to register your event or find a protest near you

Following is a statement on the Day of Actions released by the ANSWER Coalition:

22 years after the US went to war in Iraq based on lies, the Trump administration is preparing a major war against Venezuela. We must act now to stop this war before it starts. Today, Trump promised land strikes would begin “very soon,” has called for its airspace to be “closed,” and terminated negotiations with Venezuela’s government. These are all the signs of a full-scale regime change operation, which would be a catastrophe for the region.  The Trump Administration’s repeated strikes in the Caribbean have shocked the world as brazen violations of international law.

Pete Hegseth’s order to kill all survivors of the boats disabled by US missile strikes in the open seas is an obvious war crime. The missile strikes against boats in the Caribbean and the Pacific is a clear violation of international law, as would be all future strikes by the Pentagon. 70% of the people in this country oppose military intervention against Venezuela. People are seeing through the bizarre and twisted pretexts the Trump administration is providing about drug trafficking, for which he has provided no evidence. Trump is unconstitutionally bypassing a Congressional declaration of war or even authorization of use of force, while Secretary of War Crimes Pete Hegseth is giving out appalling “kill them all” orders and justifying illegal “double-tap” strikes to target stranded survivors.

The whole world sees all of this as transparently illegal, and is calling for peace.  15,000 US troops have already been mobilized to surround Venezuela, alongside massive naval assets, spending over $1 billion in US tax dollars.

But it is not too late to act! We must stop this war before it starts. Rally across the nation this Saturday, December 6th, to send a message to Trump and Congress: “No War on Venezuela!”

We must learn the lessons of Vietnam and Iraq. In each case, the war hawks invented pretexts. They promised quick victories. They were wrong. But the notion that the U.S. can carry out military invasions into the heart of Latin America without a massive blowback is outlandish.  We are at a critical moment. Members of Congress from both parties are increasingly speaking up about the illegality of these strikes. But the situation requires much more urgency — once the escalation ladder is climbed, there may be no going back. Stop the war before it starts!
