The Baltimore People’s Power Assembly strongly condemns ICE’s brutal shooting of a landscape worker and his family member in Glen Burnie, Maryland. ICE officers fired multiple rounds into a moving van without warning, hitting the vehicle’s driver several times and causing the van to crash.
ICE does not have jurisdiction to act as domestic law enforcement. This shooting was nothing more than racial profiling at the end of a gun. The Department of Homeland Security – ICE’s parent department – claimed the immigration officers acted in self defense. However, an attorney representing the van’s passenger has raised facts that bring DHS’s account into serious question.
It is time for the Maryland Governor’s office and the Maryland General Assembly to act. Both institutions have the power to ban cooperation agreements between Maryland counties and ICE, like the joint ICE-Anne Arundel County police “Criminal Alien Program.” Further, the State of Maryland should declare all 287(G) agreements between ICE and Maryland counties to be defunct as they violate the basic constitutional and human rights of Maryland citizens.
Baltimore PPA urges the local press to pressure Governor Moore and the General Assembly on this issue. Join PPA outside ICE’s Maryland headquarters at a rally on December 29th to demand that ICE immediately leave all counties and municipalities in Maryland.
