Medicare for all! – Stop the raids and deportations of immigrant workers!

Southern Workers Assembly

Trump and the billionaires are waging an all out war on our rights, clawing back victories won through struggles over the last century, and driving down conditions for workers across the board. MLK Day 2026 takes particular significance in the face of the unprecedented assault taking place: on voting rights, affirmative action and civil rights, and many other rights and working class victories. Twenty-two million workers faced major increases in health insurance costs starting January 1, due to Congress failing to extend ACA subsidies. Four million workers will likely lose coverage as they struggle to afford rising costs. State workers and teachers across many Southern states will also see increased healthcare costs.

Millions will suffer from cuts to Medicare and Medicaid due to Trump’s Big Ugly Bill.   Dr. Martin Luther King Jr spoke on healthcare inequality in 1966 when he stated: “Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health is the most shocking and inhumane because it often results in physical death.” Workers must unite to demand “Medicare for All.” Many of us are facing reduced hours and other cutbacks at work from the trade wars and introduction of AI and other technology, and struggle to make ends meet as everything keeps getting more expensive.

The billionaires have launched a campaign of vile racism backed by the violence and brutality of the Department of Homeland Security and other police agencies against immigrant workers to keep us divided, afraid, and demoralized. They want there to be division among workers to prevent us from coming together and realizing the power we have to change conditions at our jobs and in our society at large.  Trump gave a record $170 billion to ICE and CBP to roam the country terrorizing immigrants and our communities. Their regular and brazen violation of rights gives the green light to our bosses and other government agencies to do the same. This affects all workers, and we cannot allow any more of our rights to be eroded, families to be separated, or community members to be killed by ICE agents. Workers must demand “Stop ICE! End the raids and deportations of immigrant workers!”

We call on all worker organizations to unite with this call to action on Dr. Rev. Martin Luther King Jr holiday 2026.
