Appeal from the
| Madison-Rafah Sister-City Project: |
Summary: Three calls or emails needed ASAP (details below)
One to your State Assembly Rep
One to your State Senator
One to Governor Tony Evers
Hello Everyone,
AB672, the latest Republican-authored bill broadly attacking our democratic rights, is being fast-tracked through the legislature.Last week, passage was recommended by the Assembly Committee on Criminal Justice and Public Safety on a 10-5 party-line vote.
Today it was sent to the full Assembly for a vote this Thursday, Jan. 22.
Although its Senate companion, SB650 has not yet been scheduled for a hearing, we are told that if AB672 passes, the Assembly will then send the legislation to the Senate for quick action.
This legislation would dangerously curtail freedom of speech, increase options for government surveillance of Wisconsinites, and enhance penalties for Wisconsinites accused of “acting as an agent of a foreign government or terrorist organization with the intent to silence or punish persons for their political view.”
The extremely broad and vague language means that the law can be used to suppress free speech and to justify greatly expanded government surveillance of WI residents based purely on their political opinions. It would endanger the right to hold and express views differing from those of the party currently in power, constituting a grave threat to democracy and freedom of speech and eroding or ending First Amendment protections in our state.
For an excellent analysis of the legislation and its implications, see Why Every Wisconsinite Should Urge Their Legislators to Oppose AB672 by KD Thompson.)
Please contact your own state representative and your state Senator to insist they vote “NO” on AB672 and SB650 respectively. If you’ve already been told they oppose it, THANK THEM. (The five reps who voted “no” in committee are Rep. Jodi Emerson/Eau Claire; Rep. Steve Doyle/Onalaska; Rep. Tip McGuire/Kenosha; Rep. Sequanna Taylor/Milwaukee; and Rep. Ryan Spaude/Ashwaubenon.)
If you don’t already know who represents you, click here or visit https://maps.legis.wisconsin.gov to find out who your legislators are. Choose “find by address” at the top & enter your street address. Call or email as you prefer.
Also, please contact Governor Tony Evers’ office to voice your opposition to this legislation. He will be asked to veto the bill in the (likely) event that it passes. We need to build pressure for that NOW. To contact the Governor’s office call 608-266-1212. Thanks,Barb O.

“Hi, my name is [YOUR NAME]. I’m calling to urge Representative [NAME] to vote NO on Assembly Bill 672.
This bill is overly broad and threatens free speech. It could be used to target legitimate activists, international students, and peaceful protesters. It’s also fiscally irresponsible – the bill will increase costs significantly with no guarantee the budget can absorb them.I’m asking Representative [NAME] to vote NO on AB 672. Can you tell me if he/she plans to do so?
