This November, voters will turn out for a historic election taking place at the height of a global pandemic and economic downturn, which many are calling “the most important election in United States history.” The NLG views voting in this election as an action, and governors around the country have already started taking efforts to suppress voter turnout, largely in support of the Trump Administration which says that it will challenge election results if not re-elected, and aggressively crackdown on protests that result. Voters should be prepared for voter suppression on November 3rd, and activists should be aware of their rights.

We are terrified, but we will not stop fighting.
On Oct 20, the judge in Breonna Taylor’s case ruled that the Kentucky grand jurors could speak freely about the grand jury proceedings. That ruling led to a second anonymous juror issuing a statement that the jury was never presented with homicide charges for the police officers who unjustly ended Breonna Taylor’s life- over a botched drug raid. Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron did not fight for justice or stand against police brutality–but we have, and we will continue.
The Detroit & Michigan Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild has been fighting against police brutality all summer–from representing over 300 arrested protestors to filing a civil lawsuit in federal court against the City of Detroit, Detroit Police Department and even Detroit Police Chief James Craig for aggressively violating people’s constitutional rights. Several of our Board of Directors are founding members of the Coalition for Police Transparency and Accountability, which formed this summer in response to Detroit police executing 19-year-old Hakim Littleton after subduing him so that he posed no continuing threat to the officers. The NLG has been flooded with calls to show up and fight for our comrades whose lives are in constant danger under a government that doesn’t believe their lives matter.
We are at war. We are terrified, but we will never stop fighting for what we believe in – fair and equal justice, an end to police terror, and policies that reflect Black Lives Matter.

With nearly 600 deaths in Milwaukee County in the past 7 months alone, the pandemic has taken a devastating toll on our community. Milwaukeeans have spent eight months through hardships. It didn’t have to be this way.
To make matters worse, there’s been no opportunity to mourn the lives lost and the toll it has taken on our families. This is why we are coming together to help create a public space to honor the lives we have lost and help the community heal from this tragedy.

This Memorial will be dedicated to the family members friends neighbors and colleagues we have lost this tribute consists of nearly 600 empty chairs to represent each life taken from our community.

More welcome news from last night’s Milwaukee Public Schools board meeting! MPS will not be reopening for in-person learning anytime soon. The board passed the following resolution in relation to the district’s in-person school reopening plan:
2. The administration engage the community in discussion and survey on a more stringent gating criteria for reopening.
3. The board reassemble after January 18, 2021 to reevaluate the pandemic and get an update on the roadmap to readiness.
4. The superintendent update the board on the planning process in both November and December of 2020
AGAIN: The district will NOT be opening up for face-to-face in January. They will also be opening up a wider community discussion on creating stricter gating criteria in order to open for face-to-face learning.
