Detroit, June 6, 2020: MOURNING LOST FUTURES: A WAKE FOR OUR SLAIN FAMILY

MOURNING LOST FUTURES: A WAKE FOR OUR SLAIN FAMILY

GATEWAY TO FREEDOM – HART PLAZA
BRING MASKS – WEAR WHITE

4:30 P.M. EST

Join with Detroit’s frontline communities as we mourn the loss of our beloved kinfolk to murderous police violence.

While we mourn, we come together to resist police violence, to envision a world beyond policing and oppression, and to think together about how we can build new communities, and a new society.

We will march in a procession starting at The Gateway to Freedom Memorial on the Riverwalk at Hart Plaza and through Campus Martius to Cass Corridor, stopping for political education teach-ins and ceremonies at long-time organizations in the area (EMEAC, Cass Commons, Michigan Welfare Rights Organization) and then we will end up at the Cass Commons and close out with a teach-in on movement building.

ACCORDING TO TRADITION WE ASK THAT EVERYONE WEARS WHITE; try to bring a jar (if you can), a white umbrella, and something to cover your hair.

For accessibility needs and concerns and if you’re interested in volunteering to pass out water, or to assist with set-up/break-down, please reach out to landwaterppl@gmail.com

Hosts: Frontline Detroit, East Michigan Environmental Action Council, General Baker Institute, Detroit Independent Freedom Schools Movement, Detroit Recordings

A Mother’s Birthday Tribute to Breonna Taylor: “It’s hard to breathe without her.”

https://bit.ly/3cLrnYd

June 5, 2020

Today, Breonna Taylor should be celebrating her 27th birthday. She should be putting on a dress, doing her hair and makeup, and meeting the many people who love her at a nice restaurant. “She was looking forward to it,” her mother, Tamika Palmer, told the Cut. “We would have been out somewhere eating something fancy … She definitely should be here.”

Instead, Taylor’s family is gathering in Louisville to celebrate a life cut cruelly short by police brutality.

On March 13, Taylor was killed by three officers who barged into her apartment after midnight as she lay in bed with her boyfriend, Kenneth Walker. He fired the first shot, thinking there was a break-in since the officers didn’t knock or announce themselves. In response, the cops sprayed gunfire, shooting Taylor with eight bullets before she died on the hallway floor. The police said they had a warrant to search the 26-year-old’s apartment because of suspected ties to a drug dealer, despite the fact that officers had already found their main target, according to an attorney involved in the case.

While the officers involved were put on leave, they have yet to face criminal charges. Kentucky’s attorney general is still reviewing the case, and on May 21, the FBI began an investigation. Taylor’s family has filed a wrongful-death lawsuit against Louisville’s police department.

In protests around the world, people are shouting Breonna Taylor’s name, along with those of George Floyd and Ahmaud Arbery, as a rallying cry against racism and police brutality. Palmer says she is grateful for the attention. But every night, she struggles to sleep, thinking about how her daughter, an EMT and aspiring nurse who was poised to do so much good in the world, is no longer a part of it. For her birthday, Palmer shared with the Cut her favorite memories of her firstborn child, recalling a beloved, joyful daughter….

Safe Jobs Save Lives Campaign: Southern Workers Assembly Webinar on Meatpacking Workers

As the COVID-19 pandemic enters its third month, workers’ struggles across the South and around the country are heating up – particularly in the meatpacking industry. More than 230 strikes and job actions have taken place since the crisis began, according to activities being tracked by the Payday Report. This includes walkouts by poultry workers in Columbia, SC; Kathleen, GA; among many other areas.

In addition, an uprising has broken out in response to the murder of George Floyd. It is clear that Black workers in the US face two pandemics –  one in the workplace with risk of exposure to COVID-19, and in their communities from killer cops, which is part of a War on Black America.

In April, the Southern Workers Assembly launched the Safe Jobs Save Lives campaign to advance the organization of workers at the workplace and to build solidarity formations such as local workers assemblies. This campaign is especially critical in the South, a region with the lowest union density in the country and with 57% of the Black population in the United States.

The meatpacking industry – which largely employ Black, Latinx, and immigrant workers – has been particularly hard hit by COVID-19 outbreaks. As of May 27, 43 of the 50 largest coronavirus clusters were tied to either meatpacking or prison facilities. Rural communities that have a meatpacking plant have a COVID-19 infection rate that is 5x higher than those without. These communities are already impacted by polluting industries that cause widespread health problems and weakened immune systems.

The SWA issued a statement condemning Trump’s order that meatpacking plants remain open. The SWA urged more struggle and solidarity for these workers as part of building the Safe Jobs Save Lives campaign. We continued to make contact with meatpacking workers and their organizations throughout the South, and are preparing a special pamphlet on the history and conditions of the industry as a tool to aid the struggles now underway and breaking out.

The cruel death of George Floyd by four cops opens wounds of a racist history of killer police shaped by the abuse of power under the capitalist political and economic system. The SWA calls on all workers and their organizations to take actions expressing condemnation of this racist act.

We invite you to participate in our next discussion on how to build the Safe Jobs Save Lives campaign, with a special focus on the meatpacking industry, on Sunday, June 14, at 6pm. Register Now – click here
