As Coronavirus Grips US, Americans Get a Taste of Life Under Sanctions

Washington D.C. (MPN) – Crippling shortages, travel restrictions, and overwhelmed medical services will give Americans a taste of what it is like for the millions of people living under US sanctions worldwide….

One of the principal reasons why the U.S. is so unprepared is that it spends so little on public health in comparison with what it spends on war. The U.S. military’s projected budget is $934 billion per year, the Pentagon’s is $712 billion. In contrast, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) costs the taxpayer only $6.6 billion. At a time of crisis, many Americans are reassessing which organization they feel is truly protecting them from danger. While increasing the military budget, President Trump has consistently argued for cuts to the CDC. Amazingly, the Trump administration confirmed last week that it intends to slash funding from the body, even as the country begins reeling from the impact of COVID-19….

Coronavirus Update: Leaked documents show McDonald’s is lobbying to BLOCK paid sick leave

It’s cruel.

No other company has more workers without paid sick leave than McDonald’s.

Over half a million McDonald’s workers are being forced to make an impossible choice: come to work sick, or stay home and watch your paycheck disappear because we don’t have paid sick leave.

Now, leaked documents show that McDonald’s is lobbying the Trump Administration to block paid sick leave legislation.

Share the video on Facebook or forward this email to 3 friends.

Right now, if we don’t work for any reason, we don’t get paid. If we get sick we don’t get the money we need to stock up on food, keep the lights on, and get crucial medicine. If we get sick, we can’t get the things we need to survive this pandemic without ending up on the street.

Watch the video for yourself, and then forward this email to 3 friends to get the word out!

The good news is that our movement is gaining traction.

Thousands of us signed the petition demanding McDonald’s provide paid sick leave. And the very next day, McDonald’s announced changes to their paid sick leave policy – but that policy doesn’t cover 95% of restaurants.

Now, they are closing dining rooms in stores across the country, meaning even more cuts to our hours. We are at war against a virus that is killing people, but McDonald’s is conducting business as usual.

It’s scary out there for us, and we need McDonald’s to do everything they can right now to protect everyone who wears their uniform.

Thank you for all your help right now. We will get through this.

In Solidarity,

Bettie Douglas

‘Literally Weaponizing Coronavirus’: Despite One of World’s Worst Outbreaks of Deadly Virus, US Hits Iran With ‘Brutal’ New Sanctions

https://bit.ly/3a7Ubti

“How evil and heartless can this government get?” peace activist Medea Benjamin asked Wednesday after the State Department announced it would impose new sanctions on Iran as the country faces one of the worst coronavirus outbreaks in the world.

The move by the U.S. government flew in the face of demands from advocacy groups and the Iranian government to suspend sanctions to ensure Iranians can access life-saving medication and supplies.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced the U.S. will introduce fresh sanctions on nine entities and three individuals who the U.S. says provide the Iranian government with revenue, in order to “deprive the regime of critical income from its petrochemical industry and further Iran’s economic and diplomatic isolation.”

The move follows rocket attacks on U.S. forces in Iraq, which the Trump administration claims were linked to Iran-backed forces.

Benjamin, co-founder of the anti-war group CODEPINK, called the State Department’s move “unconscionable….”

Get Colectivo Production Workers Paid Leave for COVID 19

SIGN PETITION: https://bit.ly/33y6Djv

While Colectivo cafe workers were able to win 2 weeks of paid leave during the ongoing closures due to the spread of COVID 19, production workers have been informed that they have the option to work but that no paid leave will be granted, PTO will have to be used, and no corresponding wage increase will be made to reflect the increased risk of coming to work. Those who choose to stay home to take care of their families or out of concern for their health, are left without any type of income options aside from a very limited amount of PTO.

The World Health Organization has declared this a pandemic, Wisconsin has declared a state of emergency, and the CDC recommends social distancing and groups of no more than 10 people. Even if members of our staff are young and presumably healthy, we can still act as vectors, incubating the virus without showing symptoms, and transmit the virus to our at-risk coworkers, and by extension anyone that they come into contact with.

The CDC recommends that, “All employers should be ready to implement strategies to protect their workforce from COVID-19 while ensuring continuity of operations. During a COVID-19 outbreak…Employers should ensure the plan is flexible and involve your employees in developing and reviewing your plan, conduct a focused discussion or exercise using your plan, to find out ahead of time whether the plan has gaps or problems that need to be corrected, share your plan with employees and explain what human resources policies, workplace and leave flexibilities, and pay and benefits will be available to them.”

SIGN PETITION: https://bit.ly/33y6Djv
In relation to production workers at Colectivo, a meeting was held in which no accommodations were made for employees in terms of having a flexible plan, discussing potential problems or changes within this plan, and leaving no room for “workplace and leave flexibilities, and pay and benefits” outside of using our PTO and staying home without pay. Please abide by Colectivo’s mission statement: we need to respect our products, people, and places. Everyone is a customer, and everyone should be treated the same. It’s disrespectful to force workers to choose between losing their wages, depleting their PTO, or putting public health at risk.

This is unacceptable as continued operations not only put every employee at risk in order to continue unnecessary production, but also fails to compensate workers for the increased risk they are taking on by continuing to work.

Colectivo production workers demand:

-Paid time off in addition to regular PTO for all those who choose not to continue working during the COVID 19 Pandemic.

-Paid time and a half for those who want to continue working their production jobs as normal, to reflect the increased risk of working in an environment with 10+ people during a pandemic.

We are working to ensure that employers are doing everything possible to protect and support CWA members during this pandemic. We are also pushing for strong protections for all workers in any legislation that is passed to address the crisis including guaranteed paid time off for illness or to care for a family member. Workers and retirees must be our country’s first priority!
