Brazilians Recover Vision in Bolivia thanks to Cuban doctors

Beni, Bolivia, Jun 5 (Prensa Latina) Thousands of Brazilians recovered their vision thanks to the work of Cuban ophthalmologists based in the Bolivian town of Guayaramerin, where they are seeking a cure for pathologies such as cataracts and pterigium, experts confirmed this on Wednesday.

After crossing the Mamore River, which joins this town with Brazil’s neighboring Guajara-Mirim, they are examined by specialists from the Caribbean island at the Cuba-Bolivia Eye Center, active since 2006, director Jose Sanchez told Prensa Latina.

Surgery is very expensive in my country, in addition to the effectiveness of the surgical procedure and the good treatment received, commented Lorenzo Ferreiro, one of the Brazilian patients operated for cataracts when referring to the advantages offered by traveling to Guayaramerin -located in the Amazon region-, a journey that in some cases lasts several days.

The facility is located near the pier where patients from Guajara-Mirim arrive at dawn, after crossing the Mamore.

Some 584,000 Bolivians benefited from the Mission Miracle program, implemented in the Andean territory 13 years ago, an initiative that also benefited some 61,000 Brazilians, 46,000 Argentines, 25,000 Peruvians and 314 Paraguayans, said Dr. Yohandra Muro, head of the medical brigade made up of Cuban professionals.

The project came about as a result of the strengthening of relations between Cuba and Bolivia, promoted by President Evo Morales and the leader of the Cuban revolution, Fidel Castro.

Legal Fund For 17 yr old brutalized By Madison Police Department

https://tinyurl.com/y27zuau8https://tinyurl.com/y27zuau8

A 17-year-old West High School student was having a mental wellness crisis. He posed no threat according to the police report released by the Madison Police Department.   The young man was not doing well mentally which was apparent by his behavior according to school staff and the police officer assigned to West High School.  The young man left school and went home. The school police officer dispatched multiple officers to his home. The video posted above is what pursued when the young man came downstairs to grab his phone and was headed back upstairs to grab his socks.

Per his guardian, he was cooperative and posed no threat to the officer(s) when they grabbed the 17-year-old and threw him against the wall as he was walking past. The video explains it all.  The young boy was then punched in the head 3X and passed out from the blows to his head.

Madison Police Department is threatening to charge the 17-year-old with criminal charges. They have yet to file any charges. However, in order to protect the young man, the community has secured an attorney to represent him and to invoke his right to counsel.

Strang and Bradley Law Firm of Madison WI have been retained to represent the young man.  All proceeds from the GoFund will be deposited directly into a trust via the law firm.   Any leftover funds will be returned to the organizer and placed in the community support services funds to be used to support similar needs of families in Madison WI.

MILWAUKEE

Welcome Fr. Luis Barrios, of Pastors for Peace Caravan to Cuba

The Wisconsin Coalition to Normalize Relations with Cuba

On Thursday, June 13, Milwaukeeans will welcome Fr. Luis Barrios of Pastors for Peace (PFP) with a potluck dinner at 6pm and a program at 7pm, at Central United Methodist Church, 633 N. 25th Street in Milwaukee, 53233. This event is part of a national movement in dozens of cities, welcoming the 30th Friendshipment Caravan to Cuba, an act of civil disobedience in defiance of what PFP calls an immoral policy of hostility against the people of Cuba.

President Trump and his National Security Advisor John Bolton recently announced an attempt to further tighten the U.S. restrictions on the right of our people to travel to Cuba. Trump also authorized lawsuits in U.S. courts that no U.S. president had ever allowed, against U.S. and other companies doing business in Cuba. This is on top of an admitted U.S. government policy against Cuba since 1960, designed “to decrease monetary and real wages, to bring about hunger, desperation and overthrow of government.” (4/6/1960 memo, State Dept. Central files, 737.00/4 -660. Secret. Drafted by Mallory.) The U.S. has also admitted that this “is the most comprehensive set of U.S. sanctions on any country.”

Fr. Barrios, a native of Puerto Rico, is a pastor in NYC, and a former prisoner of conscience for challenging the U.S. Army’s School of the Americas which has trained military torturers throughout Latin America. He is a professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, and the author of many works on liberation theology and other topics, including the acclaimed The Almighty Latin King and Queen Nation: Street Politics and the Transformation of a New York City Gang. He is the Board Chairman of PFP, and will speak on US/Cuban Relations in the Age of Trump, and the role of the Pastors for Peace travel challenge.

All are welcome to attend, and to bring a dish to share if possible. Financial donations to Pastors for Peace will also be welcome.

The event is sponsored locally by the Wisconsin Coalition to Normalize Relations with Cuba, with Peace Action–WI and the End the Wars Coalition MKE. Video Shows Madison Police Officers Beating Black Teenager With Bag Over His Head; Community Responds

Three Madison police officers are under investigation as home security video posted to Facebook Wednesday appears to show Madison Police Officers violently detaining a Black teen with a mental illness, putting a bag over his head and then punching his head at least three times.

A Madison Police Department incident report says a complaint of excessive force was made Monday and that “the incident was turned over to MPD’s Professional Standards and Internal Affairs Unit.”

One video clip was posted by the young man’s mother, while three clips were posted by community activist Brandi Grayson with the mother’s permission. Madison365 has chosen not to identify the mother or the teen to protect the teen’s privacy.

In an interview Wednesday with Madison365, Grayson, a longtime friend of the family who has been designated as the family spokesperson, said the incident took place Monday. The teen, a student at West High School, had not taken his required medication for several days and was “extremely agitated and was using foul language, and verbally being disrespectful.” She said the teen left school and walked home.

Grayson said police then arrived at the teen’s home while he was in the shower, and that he was willing to be taken into custody and ultimately taken to Winnebago Mental Health Institute for treatment and stabilization.

A Madison Police Department incident report says the police had been collaborating with Journey Mental Health “in determining that a 17-yr-old young man was exhibiting threatening behavior, consistent with someone in a mental health crisis,” and made the determination to place him in “protective custody” and take him to a local hospital.

When the teen attempted to walk out of the room, video shows an officer violently slamming him into a wall and then two officers forcing him down onto a couch.

The police incident report says the teen “refused to comply with their requests and subsequently resisted handcuffing.” It’s not clear from the video what requests he refused to comply with as there is no audio.

While he was being held face down, a third officer put a bag — referred to as a “spit hood” — over his head and then punching the side or back of his head three times. The officers then brought him to the floor and took him into custody.

The police incident report says the teen was spitting at police, but it’s not clear when or how he would have done so in the video. “One officer delivered several strikes during the encounter in an attempt to gain control of the subject,” the incident report says. “The subject reported no injuries to medical personnel and had no visible injuries at the time of the encounter.”

The video does not seem to indicate that the teen was armed or aggressive toward police before police initiated the physical altercation. The incident report says one officer received injuries to a thumb and rotator cuff.

Grayson said the teen is still at Winnebago Mental Health Institute in Oshkosh. There are no pending charges, but he needs to be stabilized before he can be released.

The police incident reports says “probable cause exists to charge the teen with multiple criminal charges” but that no determination has been made whether to charge him.

Police spokesman Joel Despain did not specify whether the officers involved are still on duty pending the investigation.

Reaction from the community condemning the conduct of the police has been swift.

“The police report lets us know that MPD doesn’t find anything wrong with punching a teenager in the head three times,” Progress Center for Black Women founder Sabrina Madison wrote on Facebook.

“We think it’s unacceptable,” Freedom, Inc founder and co-executive director M Adams said in an interview. “It’s what we’ve said all along. It shows the violence of police in general, and in particular the policing of Black people in Madison. There’s no justification. The person was restrained. Police should never be allowed to act out in retaliatory violence. There was no reason for it.”

Adams said police should not even have been involved in this case.

“Cops are not who you need, they do not solve mental health issues,” she said.

She also noted the nature of the video.

“One of the reasons I think this video is important is that it shows what people have been saying all along,” she said. “On these walk-alongs or ride-alongs, police are on their best behavior because they know they’re being watched. But here, they had no idea they were being watched or recorded, and this is what they did.”

Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway, Common Council President Shiva Bidar and Common Council Vice President Barbara McKinney released a joint statement late Wednesday.

“We expect a fair and thorough investigation of this very disturbing video,” the statement reads. “The key to public confidence in the integrity of the investigative process is full transparency after the fact. We are committed to a higher level of transparency and taking a proactive, problem-solving approach to the difficult issue of handling mental health crises.”

Grayson said the family will hold a press conference in the coming days.

This is a developing story. It has been updated with new information from Madison schools and Madison police. More updates will be made as we receive them.

Workers Mobilize Against Trump’s Unacceptable VA Contract Proposal

https://tinyurl.com/y5rexc78

https://www.afge.org/

Doctors, nurses, claims representatives, and other employees working at Department of Veterans Affairs facilities nationwide are uniting against the Trump administration’s effort to undermine its own workforce and, ultimately, privatize the VA.

VA employees across the country are holding more than 58 rallies, town halls, meetings with members of Congress, and union fairs on June 5 – the VA Day of Action – to fight the administration’s contract proposal that would turn the VA into a tyranny in which they have no say in their own working conditions and no right to hold rogue managers accountable.

AFGE VA Locals are mobilizing and engaging their local communities, including State Federations and Central Labor Councils. They are also taking their fight to social media with the hashtags #SaveOurVA and #IServeVeterans.

“Make no mistake. This contract is a part of this administration’s open war against working people and our democratic system,” said AFGE President J. David Cox Sr. “We will not allow it.”

The VA Day of Action is part of our union’s campaign against the VA’s contract proposal. Contract negotiations between AFGE and the VA began May 27, and locals are engaged in various actions including taking photos for social media with signs that read “Dignity,” “Fairness,” “Respect” – the theme of the contract campaign. They will also wear red on Wednesdays to show support for our negotiating team. Employees are encouraged to put up signs on their bulletin boards and bring signs to rallies or any actions. You can download “Dignity. Fairness. Respect.” signs here.

Why we fight

The contract proposal from President Trump’s Veterans Affairs Secretary Robert Wilkie would strip 260,000 VA employees of many of the rights and protections they’ve won through collective bargaining. The proposal is clearly an attempt to set VA employees up to fail and pave the way for VA privatization.

Here are a few examples of what management wants to do:

  • Eliminate the process that prevents retaliation and harassment, thereby discouraging employees from bringing to light issues that hurt their ability to take care of veterans;
  • Reduce management accountability by limiting employees’ ability to file grievances. Employees won’t, for example, be able to file a grievance against an unjust disciplinary action;
  • Allow managers to play favorites by banning collective bargaining over a range of currently permitted issues, including employee reassignments and shift changes, disciplinary actions, performance appraisals, reductions in force, physician and dentist pay, and special accommodations for employees with disabilities;
  • Restrict all communications between the union and the agency to the national level, including all grievances and unfair labor practice charges. That means individual grievances employees file might not be addressed in a timely manner, as they will now join thousands of others at the national level;
  • Limit employees’ access to their union reps by evicting union reps from their offices inside VA facilities and denying them access to computers, laptops, and other equipment used in their representational duties;
  • Require employees to complete a lengthy and intimidating form every year in order to maintain their union membership;
  • Severely restrict the use of telework and authorize managers to cancel or change telework agreements for any reason with just 12 hours advance notice.
