“US Sanctions on Venezuela Have Caused the Death of More Than 40 Thousand” – Study

https://bit.ly/2DBzl7n

The US sanctions against Venezuela, applied with more strength since August 2017, are the cause of the “death of tens of thousands of people and are worsening the humanitarian crisis” in the South American country, reveals a report by the Center for Economic and Political Research ( CEPR).

The study, made by economists Mark Weisbrot and Jeffrey Sachs, estimates that actions taken by the Donald Trump administration caused the death of around 40,000 people between 2017 and 2018.

“Sanctions have reduced the availability of food and medicine, and diseases and mortality have increased,” the document said.

Among other measures, the sanctions contributed to a sharp decrease in oil production, which caused great damage to the civilian population of the South American country, whose income depends mainly on the export of crude oil.

The most recent and cruel sanctions applied since August 2017 included a ban on doing business with the new debt issued by Caracas or shares of the state oil company Petróleos de Venezuela SA (PDVSA), as well as some existing bonds belonging to the government’s public sector of the Latin American country.

More deaths

The report points out that the new measures, which have been increased since last January, after the self-proclamation of Juan Guaidó as “president in charge” of Venezuela, and as a measure of pressure looking to oust the constitutional president, Nicolás Maduro, “will be almost surely cause tens of thousands of more avoidable deaths.”

The study makes estimates based on “approximately 80,000 people with HIV who have not received antiretroviral treatment since 2017, 16,000 people who need dialysis, 16,000 people with cancer and 4 million people with diabetes and hypertension.”

Since January, the post says, oil production has declined due to sanctions, “this will greatly accelerate the humanitarian crisis.”

In the last three months, the US has issued sanctions against Caracas, among others, they froze some 7,000 million dollars in assets to the state oil company Petróleos de Venezuela SA (PDVSA); in addition, they gave control to Guaidó of the assets of the Venezuelan Government in the banks in US territory and sanctioned the Economic and Social Development Bank (Bandes) of Venezuela, and its subsidiaries in Uruguay and Bolivia.

Sachs believes that the measures taken by the US are part of “an unsuccessful, ruthless, illegal and failed policy that causes serious damage to the Venezuelan people.”

For his part, Weisbrot believes that “this is illegal under US and international law, and the treaties that the US has signed,” which is why he invites Congress to stop such sanctions.

“Stand For Peace,” Milwaukee, WI January 26, 2019

Milwaukee, May 23, 2019: CLOSEmsdf May Picket

CLOSEmsdf May Picket

Why do we picket?
1. To educate people on the inhumane conditions at MSDF.
2. To memorialize the 18 people who have died in MSDF since it opened.
3. To let WI taxpayers know that each day someone spends in MSDF for a crimeless rule violation costs us $100.84 vs $40 to treat that person in the community where their job, housing & support systems stay secure.
4. To hold Governor Tony Evers to his campaign promises. He told the Journal Sentinel he thinks MSDF should close “as soon as possible”. It is possible right now, and he can do it himself, with a few just and necessary policy changes.

*****************************************************
Please join us during the lunch hour on May 23, on the 10th Street side of the courthouse. If enough people turn out, we may expand the picket to the state office building on 6th and Wells, where the DOC has community supervision offices.

Parking is metered or nearby public lots. If you don’t mind walking a couple blocks, its often easier to find free parking on the other side of the freeway.

We’ve been holding down this monthly picket since the spring of 2017. A coalition of Milwaukee organizations have joined up to shut down MSDF. This facility is a building within a building, where captives have no access to fresh air or sunlight. They are triple bunked in lockdown cells for over 20 hours a day. There is no outdoor rec. The facility was built and is run using funds that should be used for diversionary programs to keep people out of jail, instead it’s being used to keep them on supervision under arbitrary and vindictive probation and parole officers.

We are organizing this protest on every 23rd (unless that lands on a weekend, when there’s less foot traffic). The National Religious Campaign Against Torture has called for actions on the 23rd of every month (to bring attention to 23 hour a day lockdowns). http://www.nrcat.org/about-us/take-action-current-legislation/563-together-to-end-solitary

Can’t come?

SIGN THE PETITION!!!!

If you haven’t signed the petition yet yourself, please do here: https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/its-time-to-close-milwaukee-secure-detention-facility-msdf

Free Julian Assange & Chelsea Manning!

Julian Assange has been arrested and will be deported to the US to face criminal charges. Apparently, they want him for telling the truth about the war crimes the US committed in Iraq, which were revealed by Chelsea Manning. Part of what was revealed was the “Collateral Murder” video that was played at the first UNAC conference and introduced by Ethan McCord who was a soldier on the ground as the US military shot and killed Iraqi civilians from a helicopter and then killed the first responders as they came to help. As they were shooting, you can hear the US soldiers laughing as the people on the ground tried to scatter and many fell to their death. The video of Ethan McCord at the UNAC conference can be seen here

This “Collateral Murder” video was released by Chelsea Manning to WikiLeaks. Today Manning sits in jail, unwilling to be questioned by a grand jury trying to get evidence to prosecute Julian Assange. Manning and Assange are heroes of the movement.

It was nice to see that Julian Assange would not willingly surrender to the UK police thugs and they required 7 thugs to carry him out.

What right does the US have to charge someone who is not a citizen of the US for revealing war crimes? Why is the media not standing behind him? This is an attack on the first amendment rights of all of us. The movement for peace and justice must come together and support Julian Assange and Chelsea Manning.

UNAC statement from August, 2018 in support of Julian Assange. http://nepajac.org/julian.htm

UNAC urges all groups to organize actions in support of Julian Assange and Chelsea Manning.  If you are holding an action in their support,  please let us know by clicking here. https://www.unacpeace.org/assange.html

VENEZUELA: EMBASSY PROTECTION COLLECTIVE ‘THE NEXT TWO DAYS ARE CRUCIAL’

No War on Venezuela is forwarding this important announcement from Popular Resistance

Embassy Protection Collective Will Refuse To Turn Over Embassy To US Puppet Government: Arrests Expected

By Kevin Zeese and Margaret Flowers, Popular Resistance

The next two days will be crucial for the protection of the Venezuelan embassy in Washington, DC. The Embassy Protection Collective is prepared to stay at the embassy for the foreseeable future, for as long as it takes to protect the sovereignty of Venezuela from a coup led by the United States with its fraudulent puppet government that the entire world knows is a farce — unelected and illegal under Venezuelan and international law. We stand with the Venezuelan government and their legitimately-elected president, Nicolas Maduro.

If you can make it to Washington, DC in the next two days, contact us by completing this form. If you can’t come to DC, please mobilize on Thursday, April 25 at the Venezuelan embassy nearest you to say that the embassy is the property of the Venezuelan government of Nicolas Maduro and that you will protect it from illegal takeovers if such were attempted. This is important because if the US is successful at taking the embassy in DC, other countries may follow suit.

In Washington, DC, people can take action inside or outside of the embassy. A strong show of public support will prevent the takeover of the embassy. There are many levels of risk people can take to show their solidarity with the people of Venezuela. In the last two days, more than 800 people and organizations have signed on to the Declaration of the Embassy Protective (Colectivos De La Paz). The Declaration makes explicit the illegal actions of the Trump administration and their fake puppet government and the legitimacy of President Maduro and the elected Venezuelan government. Sign on to the Declaration here to show your solidarity with the Venezuelan people and your opposition to the US coup.

There has been a series of amazing events at the Venezuelan embassy in Washington, DC. The art build organized by the Embassy Protection Collective resulted in the Georgetown embassy being covered with political signs that describe the US coup and the fraudulent, illegal, puppet government. A banner with the “Eyes of Chavez” was installed on the embassy along with multiple other banners. This Wednesday night, the Collective, which was initiated by CODE PINK and Popular Resistance, will be holding a forum with former CIA officer John Kiriakou. Kiriakou will discuss “An Inside View of CIA-Led Coups.” The irony of Kiriakou making this presentation from inside an embassy being threatened by US take-over should not be lost on anyone. That forum will be followed by a nonviolent direct action training for people who plan to resist the next day. And, there will be a light projection displaying images on the Venezuelan embassy.

The Collective has highlighted that what is occurring in Venezuela is a US coup. Billboards attached to the building show the “The Regime Change Checklist,” which describes some of the steps the US has taken to force a coup in Venezuela. Another is “US Regime Change Results,” which summarizes some of the many US coups and their devastating impacts. A series of 32 panels along the front of the embassy describes the chronology of the US regime change campaign.

The Embassy Protection Collective is in the embassy with the permission of the Venezuelan government. The Collective is not breaking the law but serving the people of Venezuela. If law enforcement enters the embassy without permission of the Maduro government, they will be breaking the law and invading Venezuela’s sovereign territory. This is a time when all who oppose US intervention need to show their support by doing all they can to protect the Venezuelan embassy in Washington, DC.
