Milwaukee, April 5, 2019: Fight Back Friday!

Fight Back Friday!

815 E Locust Street, Milwaukee, 4 P.M.

We love working in Milwaukee Public Schools, but know our days are also challenging and stressful. That’s why Milwaukee Teachers’ Education Association (MTEA) welcomes all MPS educators and education workers to the Riverwest Public House Cooperative for “Fight Back Friday.” This event will be held on the first Friday of every month from 4pm to 6pm, and will offer local educators and education workers a space to connect, rejuvenate, and advocate for our students and profession.

Every month we will feature a different activity or speaker to keep the event fresh. Come and join others fighting to make our public schools the best possible place for our students. We will be discussing a submission process to create a new logo for the event at our first event so come and enjoy a beverage (Public House will offer a drink special), catch up on union and public education advocacy, and meet other awesome MPS folks! This event is free and open to the public.

An Open Letter: We are Jews Who Stand with Representative Ilhan Omar

https://bit.ly/2EVzwvo

As Jews with a long tradition of social justice and anti-racism, AIPAC does not represent us. #WeStandWithIlhan

We are Jews who stand with Representative Ilhan Omar. She has been falsely accused of anti-Semitism since tweeting that GOP threats against her and Representative Rashida Tlaib for criticizing Israel were “all about the Benjamins baby.” When asked to clarify who is paying members of Congress “to be pro-Israel,” Omar replied, “AIPAC!”

There is absolutely nothing anti-Semitic about calling out the noxious role of AIPAC (the American Israel Public Affairs Committee), which spends millions each year to buy U.S. political support for Israeli aggression and militarism against the Palestinian people. As the NYC chapter of Jewish Voice for Peace summed up:

Accurately describing how the Israel lobby works in this country is not anti-Semitic. The never-ending smear campaign against Ilhan Omar is racism and Islamophobia in action.”

There is no denying that money rules U.S. politics, and that powerful lobbies from the NRA to the fossil fuel lobby to AIPAC play destructive, anti-democratic roles in our political system, wielding money for legislative influence. The pro-Israel lobby has played an outsized role in producing nearly unanimous congressional support for Israel. It has organized a national campaign to suppress Palestinian activism on campuses, made the Israel Anti-Boycott Act a legislative priority, and for decades has boasted about their power to make or break political careers. To point out this reality is not anti-Semitic.

Genuine anti-Semitism and the growth of white supremacy are indeed growing concerns in Donald Trump’s America. Omar and Tlaib, the first two Muslim congresswomen in this country’s history, are not part of this ugly growth of white supremacy. Instead, they are part of movements which seek to confront it. For that, and for their courageous support of the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) campaign, they are being smeared by a racist and Islamophobic chorus, including the House Democratic leadership itself.

Report on Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation in the Wisconsin DOC as of March 2019

This report is an attempt to present a systematic investigation of five issues within the Wisconsin Department of Corrections in an attempt to raise awareness and build public support for the plight of those incarcerated in DOC facilities.

The report incorporates public records and other documents obtained by Milwaukee IWOC. The documents directly referenced in the report have been included in this post, though they are often taken from much larger sets of records obtained through public records request. US Attempts to Topple Venezuelan Govt by Shifting Control of Citgo to Opposition Have so Far Failed

https://bit.ly/2VHbJET

Venezuela is scrambling to find buyers for its oil, hoping to keep revenue streams alive even as President Nicolas Maduro loses control of Citgo. The US-based subsidiary of PDVSA officially severed ties with its parent company in order to comply with US sanctions, according to Reuters. The American government is trying to shift control of Citgo into the hands of Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaidó. Citgo has stopped sending payments to PDVSA, and Gauidó has appointed a new board to the company. Some Venezuelan employees working at Citgo in the US returned back to Caracas.

Citgo is one of the major prizes that the US has tried to wrestle away from Maduro as part of the American regime change campaign in Venezuela. Citgo is the eight largest refiner in the US at 750,000 bpd, and it owns pipelines and retail gasoline stations. The company is a key source of revenue for the Venezuelan government.
