by Kumasi
Black August originated in the California penal system to honor fallen Freedom Fighters Jonathan Jackson, George Jackson, William Christmas, James McClain and Khatari Gaulden. Jonathan Jackson was gunned down outside the Marin County California courthouse on Aug. 7, 1970, as he attempted to liberate three imprisoned Black Liberation Fighters: James McClain, William Christmas and Ruchell Magee.
Ruchell Magee is the sole survivor of that armed liberation attempt. He is the former co-defendant of Angela Davis and has been locked down for 38 years [now 45 years], most of it in solitary confinement. George Jackson was assassinated by prison guards during a Black prison rebellion at San Quentin on Aug. 21, 1971. Three prison guards were also killed during that rebellion and prison officials charged six Black and Latino prisoners with the death of those guards. These six brothers became known as the San Quentin Six.
Khatari Gaulden was a prominent leader of the Black Guerilla Family (BGF) after Comrade George was assassinated. Khatari was a leading force in the formation of Black August, particularly its historical and ideological foundations. Khatari, like many of the unnamed freedom fighters of the BGF and the revolutionary prison movement of the 1970s, was murdered at San Quentin Prison in 1978 to eliminate his leadership and destroy the resistance movement.
The brothers who participated in the collective founding of Black August wore black armbands on their left arm and studied revolutionary works, focusing on the works of George Jackson. The brothers did not listen to the radio or watch television in August. Additionally, they didn’t eat or drink anything from sun-up to sundown; and loud and boastful behavior was not allowed.
The brothers did not support the prison’s canteen. The use of drugs and alcoholic beverages was prohibited and the brothers held daily exercises, because during Black August, emphasis is placed on sacrifice, fortitude and discipline. Black August is a time to embrace the principles of unity, self-sacrifice, political education, physical training and resistance.

Law4thePeople 2020: NLG Digital Convention
The NLG National Office is thrilled to announce that the 2020 #Law4thePeople Convention will take place online September 21-October 4! (There will be no programming on Sept 28 in observation of Yom Kippur.) While we’re disappointed that our usual in-person convening won’t be possible this year due to the pandemic, we’re encouraged by our membership’s enthusiastic response to this plan and are excited for the opportunity to reach a wider audience than we normally could.
Unlike our usual five-day format, we’re spreading out events over two weeks to allow participants across multiple time zones to attend as many events as possible. Even if attendees aren’t available to join every event live in real time, registrants will be able to access video recordings of programming to watch and engage with at their convenience. As always, we will offer sliding-scale registration, with waivers available upon request, and no one will be turned away due to lack of funds.
One of the most treasured aspects of the convention is the community and relationship building that takes place in between programming. That’s why in addition to workshops, major panels, meetings, CLEs, and governance, we will be sure to include online social events and other ways our attendees can connect with each other. We are paying particular attention to accessibility issues, including (but not limited to) getting CART captioning for programming, and are working with our Disability Justice Committee to ensure that we center disability justice in our planning.
Stay tuned for an upcoming call for workshop and major panel proposals, nominations for awards, meeting requests, and other ways to help shape #Law4thePeople 2020!

Rally at 9:30 A.M. Saturday, August 1, 2020 at the Winnebago County Jail, 650 West State Street, Rockford, Illinois.

Please show up! Bring breakfast items, water, snacks, sunscreen. Please wear masks.
More than 13,000 U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) employees are facing furloughs. These are the men and women that help to properly process requests for asylum, visas and citizenship. This furlough is going to hit over 70% of these workers!
We need Congress to ACT NOW and approve $1.2 billion for the agency in order to keep our bargaining unit members on the job. Being furloughed during a global health crisis would be detrimental to workers and their ability to care for their families. It will also make it nearly impossible to support a legal system of immigration and refugee process!
Go here now to tell Congress to halt the furloughs!
