Hear internationally acclaimed physician-activist Dr. Luther
Castillo speak on his work in developing a community-run medical
system for the Afro-indigenous Garifuna people of Honduras. Dr.
Castillo is featured in two documentary films, including
“Revolutionary Medicine,” which will also be premiered this afternoon,
and raises this question: “Could a remote hospital that runs on solar
panels, in a community without paved roads or electricity, provide a
new global model for health care?”

He will speak at the Central United Methodist Church
at 25th St. and Wisconsin Avenue in Milwaukee on Sunday, Sept. 27 at
4 pm. We will also have Jesse Freeston, the filmmaker of “Revolutionary
Medicine” there to answer questions. Program is free but donations
will be accepted to support this work. For more information & to see
the trailer for the film, see www.wicuba.org, or call (414) 273-1040.

Milwaukee, October 6: Never Forget, Remembrance & Awareness Rally. Justice For Brandon Johnson

Image

Calling all Community Members, activists, friends, and family to stand with Brandon Johnson’s family against injustice.

As the Hamilton family faced the challenges of mental health in their case for Dontre’s life, the Johnson family does the same as they fight for justice. And still – no accountability for Brandon’s death, three years later.

On October 3, 2012 Brandon was taken away to the Mental Health Complex in Milwaukee by police and never returned home. Three days into his stay, Brandon died from neglect while in a state of paralysis. However, Brandon walked into the facility, not paralyzed. Brandon repeatedly asked for help, stating that he was paralyzed and needed to be taken to the hospital across the street – but was told that i was all in his head. When the medical examiner released his report it stated that Brandon had a broken neck and back. Brandon suffered from deep vein thrombosis, a clot in one of his legs, and ultimately died from a pulmonary embolism when the clot broke loose and traveled to his lungs.

The stigma against mental health in this country is alive and well. Come out and stand with the Johnson and Hamilton family as we call attention to Brandon’s unjust death and remember the loving young man that he was.
