Milwaukee GarveyFest, August 19-20, 2011: ‘Capitalism Is The Disease’

From an Africans On the Move Press Release:

All are invited to come and participate in the 23rd annual GarveyFest celebration on Friday, August 19, 2011 and Saturday, August 20, 2011 at the Wisconsin Black Historical Society, 2620 W Center Street. This year’s theme is “Capitalism Is The Disease!” The theme is in recognition of today’s crisis-ridden society and the social ills that are reflected such as unemployment, poor education, little to no healthcare and the degradation of the African female, all continue to plague our community. GarveyFest is free and open to the public!

On Friday, August 19, from 6-8 p.m., a video clip will be shown. Afterwards, organizations such as Running Rebels, The League of Young Voters, Welfare Warriors, NAACP, Wisconsin Black Health Coalition, Workers World Party, Urban Underground, Campaign Against Violence, Compassion Ministries, Pan African Revolutionary Socialist Party, and Sistaz with Voicez, will facilitate a discussion on the current reality of the African community. Refreshments will be served.

On Saturday, August 20 GarveyFest kicks off with a parade from 1-2 p.m., followed by cultural performances by Nefertari Dancers and Drummers, King Kamonzi, Viva Fidel, Firey Phoenix, Young Sistas of YLA, Eric Disambwa, M2 and others. Included will also be a children’s corner of activities and free snacks, an African marketplace, Natural Hair Showcase, and an African History jeopardy game.

The annual GarveyFest is organized by Africans On the Move, a non-profit organization. With a Pan-African membership, the organization provides cultural and educational information concerning people of African descent. During the course of each year, Africans On The Move sponsors the Tubman-Machel Women’s Conference, the Malcolm X forum, and the Nia-Pempamsie Youth Conference. It also conducts a free weekend school for children, the Watoto Uhruhu Shule, on African history and culture.
