Program at church followed by a march down Dr. King drive followed by a speak-out at Dr. King memorial statue.
From George Martin of the Milwaukee Social Justice Coalition, sponsor of this event:
“Our annual format is from 1 to 3:30 pm approximately including a program on social and economic injustice at St. Francis Church, honoring Milwaukee’s historical civil rights leaders and current efforts against injustice, this year recognizing Occupy, theatrical renditions of King’s words, song, poetry and strong speech about Dr. King’s struggle for economic justice and inspiring civil rights songs, ending with “We Shall Overcome” as we begin our march. We march from the church to King’s statue for open microphone from the community. This format has been very successful over the years with continued growth… We work to have as many people as possible attend our program to share in the history and culture of the civil rights movement and be motivated to work against the economic injustice of today.”
Rev. Thomas E. Smith, keynote speaker of Detroit's Dr. MLK Day event at the Central United Methodist Church Jan. 2010.
