Is Healthcare a Human Right?

An evening with Dr. Luther Castillo, named “Honduran Doctor of the Year” and spokesperson for the Honduran resistance movement.

Thursday, March 15 — Student Union, Fireside Lounge, UW-Milwaukee, 2200 E. Kenwood Blvd., Milwaukee, WI 7:30 pm

Since 1999, Luther Castillo has directed the Luaga Hatuadi Waduheñu Foundation, dedicated to bringing vital health services to isolated Afro-indigenous coastal communities. He is featured in the film “Salud,” on the training of medical students from around the world in Cuba. Since Castillo’s graduation from the Latin American Medical School in Havana, he returned to the Honduran coast and led the construction of Honduras’ first Garifuna Hospital, now serving over half a million Afro-indigenous people in the surrounding communities for free. Castillo also led the largest international team of doctors (who were also trained in Havana’s medical school, including Haitian doctors) to Haiti following its devastating earthquake, living with the people in tents and providing much-needed urgent medical care.

Weeks before the coup that ousted the democratically elected President Mel Zelaya in Honduras, Castillo was named Director of Cooperation in the Honduran Foreign Ministry. Since then, Castillo has played a key role in the National Front of People’s Resistance to rebuild Honduran democracy (due to continuing repression following the coup, Honduras now has the highest murder rate in the world).
