Responding to the rising concerns of students about Governor Scott Walker’s dramatic budget cuts to public education, students involved in Youth Empowered in the Struggle (YES), the student arm of Voces de la Frontera, have created a Student Bill of Rights.

“The Student Bill of Rights represents the voice of over one thousand students from the MPS and RUSD school districts, and their insights and hopes to achieve a better education. These students are all part of a rising movement to defend public education, elevate student voice within their own education, and create equal opportunity and quality education for all students,” says Santiago Chavez, a YES leader and senior at Hamilton High School.

The document was produced through the collaboration of over 1000 students across the state, and there will be an MPS school board committee hearing on Thursday March 22nd.  A rally at Hamilton High School will be held prior.

Speakers include:

-Larry Miller, MPS School Board Director

-Mayra Alaniz, South Division student

-Santiago Chavez, Hamilton High student

-Christine Neumann-Ortiz, Exectutive Director of Voces de la Frontera

-Viridiana Banuelos, Hamilton High Student

Students who participated in creating the Student Bill of Rights will speak at both events and will be available for media requests. Both events are open to the public.
