On May 22, The MPS Legislative, Rules and Policies Committee met last night and voted to support  Youth Empowered in the Struggle’s Student Bill of Rights.  Youth Empowered in the Struggle (YES) is the student-led arm of Voces de la Frontera. Hundreds of students packed the room, testifying for nearly three hours in support of the Student Bill of Rights.

The committee advanced a resolution to the full board that meets on March 29th. The resolution call for:

–full support for the Bill of Rights, and

–input from all MPS high schools on the Bill of Rights to be facilitated by YES in coordination with other student and youth groups.

“The Student Bill of Rights represents the voice of over one thousand students from the MPS and RUSD school districts, and their insights and hopes to achieve a better education. These students are all part of a rising movement to defend public education, elevate student voice within their own education, and create equal opportunity and quality education for all students,” says Santiago Chavez, a YES leader and senior at Hamilton High School.

Larry Miller, school board member, said: “Students are saying they want to fight back to the attacks on education in Wisconsin. Last night they made it clear that they want control of their education- they will not allow it to be stolen from them. This is the beginning of a movement in the tradition of youth movements that have changed the world.”

The document was produced through the collaboration of over 1000 students across the state.
