Riverdale Residents, Allies Stand Ground Against Forcible Displacement From Their Homes
RIVERDALE, PA: Though water withdrawal giant Aqua America wants residents of the Riverdale Mobile Home Park out of their homes, seven families are not leaving. Construction for a water withdrawal site operated by Aqua America PVR, a consortium of Aqua America and Penn Virginia Resources, is scheduled to begin imminently. The mobile home site, which was home to over 32 families, was recently sold to Aqua America.
“We are here today primarily to protect our homes, but also to send a message to our elected officials that as long as they work on the side of big business, Lycoming County will not support them,” said Denise Biller, a resident of Riverdale Mobile Home Park. “And as long as they are complicit in the displacement of communities for the profit of businesses like Aqua America, we will stand up to protect our rights as citizens.”
Because of their refusal to leave, residents of the Riverdale Mobile Home Park have pressured Aqua America PVR into negotiations, set to begin Tuesday. Residents are demanding that Aqua America PVR allow them to remain in their homes, compensate those residents who have been displaced, and acknowledge the right of return to those who have left but wish to come back.
