From American Federation of Teachers, Local 212:
“Palermo Pizza workers in Milwaukee have been on strike for two weeks. They struck following Palermo’s attempt to break a union organizing drive by firing pro-union workers, hiring replacement workers and bringing in federal immigration authorities.
Late last week I.C.E. announced that it was suspending its immigration audit at Palermo because there was a union organizing drive taking pace. This is a huge victory for the workers, a setback to Palermo’s union busting tactics and a tribute to the workers’ solidarity and militancy. The National Labor Relations Board has scheduled a union recognition vote for July 6th.
Production is down and community support is growing, but in the new world of Act 10, Palermo’s management is refusing to negotiate with the union and has terminated several workers.
We need to stand with these courageous men and women. The Palermo strike is now the leading edge of the fight for fair treatment and collective bargaining rights in Wisconsin.
Right now you can help by contributing to the Palermo Workers Union Strike Fund. The money will be distributed to the strikers to help them pay their bills and provide for their families during this fight.
Please come to the Palermo workers strike benefit at El Local, 1801 S. 11th Street, and urge your members, friends, family and colleagues to give generously. (see attachment for details)
An injury to one is an injury to all.”
