Sisters and Brothers,
First off, this is really short notice, and I’m sorry for that. But I’m Bessie Hervey and I used to be union janitor 875 E. Wisconsin Ave. until Stewart Wangard, the rich downtown building owner, fired our union cleaning company to hire contractors that pay poverty wages. Unfortunately for Wangard, 4 champion county supervisors stand for worker’s rights and are letting him know in a serious way.
The Committee on Economic and Community Development voted 4-3 last week to delay a revised development agreement at Park East Square for one month. The agreement would name Stewart Wangard as the lead partner on the project, and was held up to send a message to him about good hiring practices. Unfortunately, Wangard and his wealthy pals were able to pressure the Committee to meet again on June 26 to revisit the issue and hold a second vote. This could mean that the county would be willing to let this greedy, union-busting, multi-million dollar financier expand in the downtown area and run amok.
If you live in Milwaukee county, mail the the key voting member of the Committee on Economic and Community Development today. Supervisor Michael Mayo supported the delay and we need to tell him to continue to stand up for workers, not for the interests of the one percent!
Signed,
Bessie Hervey,
One of the Milwaukee 12
