Chicago, March 12: Protest Assistant U.S. Attorney Barry Jonas at DePaul Law School

WHEN:
Tuesday, March 12, 2013, at 11 AM

WHERE:
DePaul University College of Law
25 E Jackson Blvd
Chicago, IL 60604

Jonas is the notorious anti-Palestinian ideologue who prosecuted the Holy Land Foundation (HLF) case, an egregious example of prosecutorial misconduct–including the use of guilt by association and collective punishment, and most notably, denying the defendants their constitutional right to confront witnesses against them, specifically an Israeli intelligence officer who refused to release his identity, agreeing only to testify under a pseudonym–that led to the convictions of 5 leaders of HLF, each now serving decades in prison.

In addition, months before the first HLF 5 trial (which ended in a hung jury), prosecutors unsealed a list of 300 un-indicted co-conspirators, including three major Muslim organizations. The purpose of this list was to allow prosecutors to use their statements in court without it being considered hearsay.

And besides the problematic legal issues described above, Jonas and the Department of Justice spent millions of our tax dollars trying the HLF 5 after the hung jury, and essentially convicted them of conspiring to give support to zakat (charity) committees in Gaza that prosecutors argued were fronts for Hamas.  These zakat committees are the same ones that U.S. AID sent money to.  U.S. AID, according to its website, “[p]rovides economic, development and humanitarian assistance around the world in support of the foreign policy goals of the United States…”

Jonas is responsible for criminalizing charity, especially charity that is sent to Palestine by Palestinian, Arab, and Muslim organizations in the U.S., and on Tuesday, March 12th, he will be speaking at DePaul University College of Law, at an event entitled “Fighting Terrorism in the Courtroom”

Join us as we protest this Assistant U.S. Attorney, who is at it again, sent here to Chicago recently to investigate the 23 Midwest anti-war and international solidarity activists who have refused to testify to the grand jury and have been under a cloud of suspicion for two and a half years, politically attacked for standing up in support of the Palestinian people’s rights to self determination, freedom and independence, and Return!

Jonas is denying the right of people to give charity or act in solidarity with the oppressed Palestinian people under colonization and occupation, and we demand that “Feeding Children is Not a Crime” and “Solidarity is Not a Crime.”

See the details on the event below, and notice the quotes around “charity” in the description of the HLF.
