An appeal from Minister William Muhammad of Mosque No. 3 in Milwaukee:
The Black families in Milwaukee are in great danger of losing needed services of the Black Health Coalition of Wisconsin’s (BHCW). The Maternal Child Health Bureau did not award BHCW the grant for the current Healthy Start funding cycle! This grant covered 80% of the BHCW budget. They will be forced to reduced their staff from 14 full-time employees to 4 part-time, severely crippling their ability to serve poor families.
BHCW is a great community resource. It provides services to the most vulnerable and disenfranchised, people other agencies will not or do not respectfully serve.
BHCW has been providing needed case management and other services to Milwaukee families since 1998 through its Milwaukee Healthy Beginnings Project (MHBP). MHBP clients have higher birth weights and overall better birth outcomes.
