Speakers:
Maria Hamilton: Mother of Dontre Hamilton, who was murdered by Milwaukee Police officer Christopher Manney in April of last year. Maria will speak about the struggle against police and white vigilante violence, and her organization Mothers for Justice United. Mothers for Justice is comprised of mothers whose unarmed children have been killed by police officers and white vigilantes. It is also made up of concerned mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, friends, clergy, and other citizens nationwide who care about the loss of these valuable lives cut short unnecessarily. They are committed to halting the epidemic of killing of unarmed people of color by police and white vigilantes in this country through direct action, legislation, and community building.
Cherrene Horazuk: is the president of AFSCME 3800, the union of clerical workers at the University of Minnesota, and is also the former National Director of CISPES, the Committee in Solidarity with the People of El Salvador. She is a long-time labor and international solidarity activist and led a strike of 3000 workers, the vast majority of whom were women, at the U of MN in 2007.
Luis Mora: An Undocumented Trans Queer Xicana Womyn. Of Mexican citizenship, she migrated to this country young, and through embracing her identity has led her to be of service to her communities. Working for the organization P.O.D.E.R, they push to stop deportations and help cases of family members, and community members who are being torn out and apart by the system. She will also be starting a midwest chapter of Familia: Trans Queer liberation movement, an organization exclusively led by trans queer youth and immigrant families in healthy education and outreach to their underserved community.
Tracey Pollock: a Freedom Road Socialist Organization member will talk about socialism from her perspective as a survivor of domestic violence. She has been involved in various levels of activism for the last decade, working primarily now in the anti-war movement. She will talk about the emancipatory (quality) of socialism for women and how women can reach new levels of empowerment as we organize for the overthrow of capitalism.
