A diverse array of Mumia Abu-Jamal supporters held a protest in the pouring rain at the Federal Courthouse in Milwaukee April 10. Chaired by longtime community and anti-police brutality activist Brian Verdin, protesters demanded Abu-Jamal be freed, or alternatively, to be allowed to receive family visits, medical records, and private health care at his own expense. The Milwaukee protest was part of an international day of action in response to Abu-Jamal’s medical neglect and torture by the state of Pennsylvania. In addition, protesters demanded that health care for prisoners be improved nationwide.
Babette Grunow of the Latin American Solidarity Committee, prisoner rights attorney Gary Grass and Minister Sean Muhammad of Milwaukee Mosque No. 3 of the Nation of Islam, also spoke. Maria Hamilton, mother of Dontre Hamilton, also participated. The protest was sponsored by the Wisconsin Bail Out the People Movement. Members of the Coalition For Justice, Committee to Stop FBI Repression, Fight For $15, International Action Center, the Progressive Students of Milwaukee, UW Milwaukee Resists Cuts, Wisconsin Jobs Now, Workers World Party and Youth Empowered in the Struggle (YES) attended and the action was supported by other labor-community organizations such as Africans on the Move, #BlackLivesMatter, Ferguson Response Network, Rockford Fight Imperialism Stand Together (FIST), Occupy the Hood MKE and the Young, Gifted and Black Coalition in Madison.
