A Message From AFSCME WI: Hands Off Civil Service! Pack the Hearings!

Dear Sisters and Brothers,

The headlong rush to pass the Walker-backed assault on state civil service has hit a speed bump, with key GOP insiders disagreeing among themselves over details.

A Senate committee vote scheduled for yesterday has been delayed for at least a couple days.

But a state Assembly committee has scheduled a hearing on the bill tomorrow Oct. 15 starting  at 9:30 in Room 412 East of the State Capitol.

Now is the time to make your voice heard!

If you can get to this hearing on short notice, please go register against the bill and stick around to testify if you have the time.

You can also click here to ask your own legislators to stop this assault on civil service.

Senate leaders may have hit the pause button while they talk amongst themselves. But they still aren’t listening to front-line employees.

Fortunately, Rep. Mandela Barnes has introduced a bill that would undo some of the damage already done to an impartial state hiring process in the last budget. His bill truly merits support.

Rep. Barnes agrees with us that public employment decisions should be based on what you know, not who you know.

AFSCME has been pushing hard to convince legislators to go back to the drawing board on the Walker-backed bill and come up with a more comprehensive approach to solving the state’s hiring crisis.

They should start by listening to state employees. If you haven’t already done so, please click here to send a message to your own legislators.

Solidarity!
