Please join us in celebrating the civil rights legacy of ABHM’s founder, Dr. James Cameron, at our annual Gathering for Racial Repair and Reconciliation.
This year’s program, Black Voices Matter! An Evening of Arts and Culture, dramatizes the historic and enduring struggle against violence and oppression by black artists and writers.
5:00pm – Doors open with the
- Unveiling of a new museum exhibit about Dr. Cameron’s Life & Writings, created by the Milwaukee Public Library
- Release, sale and signing of the new illustrated and expanded edition of Dr. Cameron’s inspiring memoir, A Time of Terror: A Survivor’s Story, published by LifeWrites Press.
6:00pm – Curtain rises for Black Voices Matter!
- Safe – a historic 1-act anti-lynching protest play – performed by the Hansberry-Sands Theatre Company
- The Survivor’s Story – readings from written wisdom of Dr. James Cameron – performed by ABHM Head Griot Reggie Jackson
- A Walk with Ida B. Wells – a 1-woman play based on the advocacy of journalist Ida B. Wells – performed by Marti Gobel, Actor/Director/Teaching Artist
Black Voices Matter! will be narrated by Robert Smith, UWM Associate Vice Chancellor for Global Inclusion & Engagement. An Audience Talkback follows the performance, moderated by Milwaukee talk radio show host Eric Von.
A Time of Terror: A Survivor’s Story will be released to the public for the first time at this event. The book, which retails at $24.99, will be available at an event discount of $20 for 1 copy or $30 for 2 copies, when pre-ordered with a ticket. Books at the event: A limited number of books will be available for purchase immediately following the performance, so it is best to pre-order books with your tickets by 2/21. Pick up your pre-ordered book at the event by showing your ticket.
The late Dr. Cameron’s son, Virgil, will be on hand to sign books, along with the writers (Reggie Jackson, Dr. Robert Smith, Dr. Fran Kaplan) who contributored new material to this expanded edition.
